Saw something similar on a recent episode of "How It's Made" they lay a pattern film on water with a solvent in it, causing the paint to seperate from the film, then they submerge products, this wraps the pattern around the product. They described it as the easiest way to put a pattern on 3D objects. The product they were using as an example was ski goggles.
