OneThird has developed a near-infrared technology that predicts the ripeness and, more importantly, the shelf life for fresh produce such as mangos, melons, kiwis, strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes and, of course, avocados. The technology — which OneThird hopes will reduce food waste by up to 25% — is being implemented in a handful of European countries.

That's sort of interesting, but it seems like a lot of tech to replace trivial knowledge. If they incorporated pricing differences, that would be better. Highly ripened fruit is cheaper than green, Get rid of the spoilables quicker.

What am I seeing with the ants? It seems to defy physics. Best guess is the pic's inverted, and they're carrying mulberries, but I wouldn't think they'd be able to hold on that tightly. It's also pretty ambitious for a prize. I'd think it would make more sense to cut them down smaller.
