Huh? No likey nuclear or coal, the dam's already built, yet they're getting rid of it?

The dam was old, and without a fish ladder. They decided to blow the damn rather than build a fish ladder. Both had the effect of restoring the stream to something a bit more natural. WA has an abundance of wind and water power that a couple dams don't have much of an effect.

Pretty much. There is a major push here in the PNW to remove dams that are not needed to help restore Salmon and Steelhead runs. The Condit and Elwha dams have both been breached to restore the native river. The major power sources for Washington are located on the Columbia river and have an over abundance of power. They sell power to the entire state as well as many western states including California. The PUD's are having to pay the wind turbine companies to not run their turbines since there is such an over abundance of power available from the dams. Dams are one of the major contributing factors to the decline in anadromous fish species in the PNW, it's good to see action being taken.

Incredible. In a few years that soil will be overgrown with grass and plants, and trees will start to grow. Nobody would ever know there was a human made dam there once.

To be fair, it isn't that dry anymore; now that the dam is out, the river level fluctuates with the season more. The river remains a good place for rafting however, with sections being a class IV rapid still.

There has been talk about getting rid of a dam in this area for at least a decade. Finally somebody decided to show them how to do it.
