I've had them on the brain lately.

And they're relatively cheap. Say 2010 vintage. 30k miles. Can probably snatch one up in the mid 30's or so. I'd just be sure to get one with as late a 2010 service date as possible so my powertrain warranty was still intact into late 2015. Why would I not buy one? MPG is horrible. I know that. Don't care. 5 mile drive to work.
Trade in the G8 and I wouldn't even notice the car payment.
I need to find a hobby or something. Looking at cars I want to buy is not a good hobby.

I always see them in black. But grey, with black accents, black wheels, looks awesome too.

only if you get the wagon.

Nope. Not the coupe either. I like the looks of the sedan. Mean, but not waving it in your face like a 13 year old boy having a tantrum. I don't want some cartoony "look at me everybody" shitpile in bright orange with a giant racing stripe down the center and fake air scoops everywhere. Just a little bit understated with 550 hp, for when you need to merge.

F^ck that... the only reason to buy the V would because you can get it in a wagon. You can get all sorts of cool cars (that aren't GM-> read that as a huge + for not being GM) in sedan form. MUCH cooler cars than the V. The wagon is where it's at and the ONLY reason to buy one

How common are those? I rarely see them on the road...

Personally, I think the Coupe looks a lot better than either the sedan or the wagon.

Nah. The V wagon has the nerd factor going for it, and that's cool for for the first day but after that what? Yeah it's a dorky looking station wagon...but wait it's got 556 hp!?!?! What? OMG!
If I would never ever ever ever ever buy a station wagon for a normal car, why would I suddenly want one with 556 hp? And the wagons are much rarer than the sedan, which is cool, but rare = more money than the sedan. Harder to find than the sedan, etc.
I would love to hear this much cooler car list.
Please make sure it's equivalent to the V in performance. And cost mid 30's. And has factory warranty for a couple years after I buy it. And I can drop it off at my garage for a $30 oil change, or pick up a headlight bulb at Autozone for $7.
Finally, it can't be some douchebag car.
Now that criteria is highly subjective, but an M3 is a douchebag car to me, just for example.

Personally, I don't see the appeal of anything BUT a wagon or hatchback as a normal car. Similar enough driving dynamics as a sedan/coupe but a whole lot more utility. These are just some random pictures I had on my phone of what I've had in the back of my Subaru Legacy. I don't see any sedans or coupes throwing a full-sized treadmill in the back. Or two complete tool chests (both top and bottom, so four total) along with various shop lights, and a 2.5liter long block fits in nice and snug as well. Not to mention most of the "normal" things I have in the back but don't have pictures of like snowboards, furniture, lumber, 10 wheels with tires on them, or a few hundred square feet worth of laminate flooring.

The only thing that keeps me from the CTS-V is the horrible gas mileage for a daily driver and the fact that I wouldn't abuse it like I would my Subarus.

I have a truck that can easily do all that, and much more.

And sure, if I wanted a wagon, the V would be a really cool wagon to have.

I don't want a wagon.

There is also a number of legitimate third party warranties out there. Might be a little expensive. There are others that aren't so great.

You sure can, but they all cost quite a bit more for similar performance. I'm not saying I wouldn't personally pay the premium, but there aren't very compelling arguments against the V.

I like wagons but honestly that cts-v wagon looks awful. You don't get the CTS-V to make trips to home depot. Get the coupe or sedan and do it right. Nobody complains that the M3 isn't in wagon form (and if it is now there aren't many of them).

I sincerely approve of the idea...but a couple of questions:

1) Where are you getting 6+qt synthetic oil changes for $30?
2) Where are you finding 2010 CTS-Vs with 30k for mid-30's?

1) I guess I'm not. I do get 8.8 qt dino oil changes for $30. So make that $60 for synthetic.
2) The one that caugt my eye on ebay last night with around 30k miles bid up to 30k, and a BIN for 38k. I guess I assumed mid 30's would be reasonable. Maybe they're a bit more than that? I know 09's with > 30k can go for low 30's. Maybe I need to adjust my price point up a bit.

I also don't care for the way the wagon looks, particularly from the rear.

The coupe is too 'wedge' for me.

The sedan is perfect, but I don't care for it in black. White or silver.

mid 30's will not get you a nice one. This is not a car you buy from ebay.... Look for a 1-2 owner max car with a documented history. Nothing off lease, nothing that's been through a dealer.

It could easily take 6 months to find a good one, be patient. Be prepared to spend a couple extra $k to get a good one.

Mine will be for sale shortly. 2011, manual, recaros, crystal red with 36k miles on it. Dealer was somewhere around $40k for a trade in, but I would consider less.

Get the wagon!

You guys are dumb I think fast wagons are awesome, sleepers or not.

V70R
M5 W
CTS-V

Definitely not nerd-mobiles. Car handling with the storage of an SUV? Yes please. Didn't volvo race 855's instead of 850's because of the aerodynamics and weight distro?

My issue isn't with wagons in general, just the cts-v wagon. The taillights are terrible and about 4ft tall. The bottom of the bumper is unfinished looking, the seams between the hatch and bumper are ugly, and the wiper is huge and ungainly.

I'd pay a premium... that said you can find used mercs, audi's, bmw, even some volvos in the 30s-40s like the caddy -> all cooler. they may or may not have as many hp, but in my experience, it isn't all about HP
