what started out thousands of years ago as a certain few brainwashing the masses to stay in power evolved into religion.
Who are these "few" that stayed in power? Matthew, Mark, Luke, John? Peter?
Weren't Christians pretty much persecuted in the Roman Empire, to where they had to have their services in catacombs?
King James was actually a big proponent of adding things like "obey your king" in 'his' version of the Bible.
The hard part is to explain to people that do not understand history and that the world was not always like it was now (so many think they still had grocery stores forever, just that they weren't as modern)
Starting from the beginning around the first bible....not all 'rulers' were smart and most even if they were relied on brute force to control a nation. People fought for food and water much of the time also, it wasn't a very civil place.
Back to the rulers, last thing you want are people smarter than you running around and books that may teach someone enough to become smarter....so the first thing you do when you sort of have possession of a new territory is kill all the extremely intelligent people that may cause problems, then take the second in commands and get their assured loyalty or kill them too, you would do this in public so all the people see how you just exterminated the 'forces' they had easily.
Now since chances are as a ruler you can't read anyway, and even if you could, you possibly may not know the language of the region....you order all books destroyed. Books were a rare item then, people don't understand that either....printing presses for books were rare until recently. (many say oh oh look here is a printing press back 100, 200, 500 years....but chances are it only did a simple page or just an image and it was still slow).
So you had scribes....they would do one master book and the scribes would hand copy it. This is also why sometimes books were inaccurate....sometimes the scribe skipped a line, sometimes they used the wrong word, sometimes they actually embellished or added their own opinions.....if caught they were killed or punished, but many times proofreading each book didn't always happen.
For these reasons it is why our civilization is now making so many leaps and bounds in the last 100 years. We don't have to start over from scratch with each new president. The Chinese have had advanced medicine forever. Medicine was the important thing to have then, and building skills....space travel and ocean travel desires came later as civilization was pushing their boundaries.
If one lived in paradise would you work on ways to improve it, or to try and leave it?
