what started out thousands of years ago as a certain few brainwashing the masses to stay in power evolved into religion.
I have heard this statement often and it confuses me.
Who are these "few" that stayed in power? Matthew, Mark, Luke, John? Peter?
Weren't Christians pretty much persecuted in the Roman Empire, to where they had to have their services in catacombs?

King James was actually a big proponent of adding things like "obey your king" in 'his' version of the Bible.

The hard part is to explain to people that do not understand history and that the world was not always like it was now (so many think they still had grocery stores forever, just that they weren't as modern)

Starting from the beginning around the first bible....not all 'rulers' were smart and most even if they were relied on brute force to control a nation. People fought for food and water much of the time also, it wasn't a very civil place.

Back to the rulers, last thing you want are people smarter than you running around and books that may teach someone enough to become smarter....so the first thing you do when you sort of have possession of a new territory is kill all the extremely intelligent people that may cause problems, then take the second in commands and get their assured loyalty or kill them too, you would do this in public so all the people see how you just exterminated the 'forces' they had easily.

Now since chances are as a ruler you can't read anyway, and even if you could, you possibly may not know the language of the region....you order all books destroyed. Books were a rare item then, people don't understand that either....printing presses for books were rare until recently. (many say oh oh look here is a printing press back 100, 200, 500 years....but chances are it only did a simple page or just an image and it was still slow).

So you had scribes....they would do one master book and the scribes would hand copy it. This is also why sometimes books were inaccurate....sometimes the scribe skipped a line, sometimes they used the wrong word, sometimes they actually embellished or added their own opinions.....if caught they were killed or punished, but many times proofreading each book didn't always happen.

For these reasons it is why our civilization is now making so many leaps and bounds in the last 100 years. We don't have to start over from scratch with each new president. The Chinese have had advanced medicine forever. Medicine was the important thing to have then, and building skills....space travel and ocean travel desires came later as civilization was pushing their boundaries.

If one lived in paradise would you work on ways to improve it, or to try and leave it? :)

How can anyone with a brain laugh at the troubles of a group of honest, self-sacrificing women who were on the way to helping kids and couples with problems?

And, for the record, "passengers were standing in the aisle, singing and rocking back and forth". They were not doing anything that would upset the weight balance of the bus, so please stop calling them idiots. Sounds more like the bus driver was a little distracted by the goings-on and took his eyes off the road, then went blaming the women for causing him to lose control of the bus. Maybe he made a mistake and is trying to cover his rear. Anyway, what kind of a professional driver loses control because people stand in the center aisle, rock back and forth and sing???? Seriously. Like that never happens.

Only every time you take a group of young people on a bus trip.

So, anyway, dozens of volunteering Christians suffered serious injuries in an unfortunate accident, so celebrations are in order.

What part of that are you missing? A heavily loaded bus will only require 1/4 of the passengers to rock in unison to get the bus teetering, and if it happened on a curve....

At the risk of sounding nitpicky, how does rocking back and forth, again, back and forth cause a bus to run off the side of the road? And why would the bus driver not ask the passengers to sit down? It's not like a bunch of Christian women would threaten to kill him if he interfered with their fun. I'm not saying the women were not at fault, but let's not jump the gun an put the blame exclusively on them.

But that is totally beside the point. The sad thing is that people would actually make comments like, "idiots, serves them right" and actually cheer because these women belonged to a certain religious group they weren't particularly fond of. It is very disheartening that this kind of behaviour and attitude seems to be representative of the average ATOT reader. There were only about 5 posters who dared express their disgust. Do you really want to come off sounding like a cruel, heartless bunch of pricks? Because if that is your intention, let me assure you, it worked.

This argument is crap.

Being part of a religious group dose not make these chicks exempt from being just as dumb as the next group of bimbos to tip a bus.

Your a group of phucking morons if you tip a bus regardless of what you were zoning out on to make you THAT completely unaware of your vehicals ability to STAY ON 4 WHEELS.

We're talking about tipping a 2 ton vehical here people, not tripping on a curb, and if you think these people are not deserving of criticism your off your rocker.

With that said, young girls are so pucking stupid :|.

Compassion seems to be in short supply these days... :(

Change the "girls" to "people", then take away "young", and I'd say you're spot on. :p

We have all done foolish things in our lives. We don't automatically deserve physical injury for our mistakes. Show some compassion!

Palek in reading your posts, you like being the martyr/devil's advocate.....

However, in answering you....do you live in the real world? I have been on many buses where the driver had to radio to police/bus station for assistance because the riders were out of control. The mental state is "I AM PAYING FOR THE BUS RIDE....I WILL DO WHAT I WANT!".

They were idiots, regardless of RACE/SEX/CREED/ETC...total idiots...perhaps we shouldn't blame them for failing to understand simple physics, but as one who is intelligent I do blame them. The whole *jesus freak* thing is really secondary and I think most are using it tongue in cheek...everyone make fun of something non-politically correct, doesn't mean in real-life you follow the joke. I am sort of a religious zealot myself, but I know there are some people that don't want to hear it and I respect that.

The disgusted threads mostly were disgust and no validation or acceptance that it may be *just a joke*. When I was active in church it was the same way....you tell a *JOKE* and all of the sudden you get 10 people telling you "Living that way is the surest way to go to H E double chopsticks...you will suffer eternal damnation..." blah blah blah....

I got severe third degree burns twice now, I have made fun of myself both times, because I was an idiot. Idiots should be made fun of, there is a reason they are called idiots. In the USA they can live nice lives too, getting paid millions for their stupidity.

There is nothing wrong with being rigid and stoic, however I don't think ATOT is the best place for such an individual and noone forces anyone to read a topic, reply to one, or even stay in the 'group'.

It is sad people die and get hurt, but it's also funny too sometimes. Doesn't mean because we are laughing we wished them dead to begin with (well some might...), it just means "let's make the best of the situation".

I see nothing funny in this accident.

Jesus still loves you anyway, even if you laugh at him and his children.

It's funny because they were idiots.

Rocking the bus back and forth and didn't expect it to not tip over?

Damn right.

The point is, the fact that they were idiots doesn't change the fact that a traffic accident is nothing to be laughed at.
Hope nobody was seriously injured.

Why not? What about comedy where the character is hurt? Let me guess you're the guy that stands up in the theatre and tries to get someone to help 'the hurt' character

I am sure many here would not be at the accident scene laughing, but laughing about it third party is part of being 'real' and not building yourself up to be some artifical Ghandi.
