careens at 250mph into chase car driven by her son.
both cars tossed several hundred feet.

um.. there's no dead man's switch on these drag racers?

like on the old trains where if the conductor releases the lever, the brakes kick in.

Cliff's Notes:

Lady drag racer starts down the track, front end comes up and right over so car is now upside down and pointing back towards the start line at full throttle. Makes 1/4 mi in just over 6 seconds despite that. Car then starts going backwards towards the start line and crosses it, crashing into the chase car holding the lady driver's son, killing both of them. Husband watches from stands.

From reading the article, I got the impression that the car flipped up, spun 180 degrees, and came back down right-side-up, but facing the starting line. I don't think it flipped all the way over.

Wow, I just got a chill down my spine. This ad is a bit ironic as well..

It went down the track, spun 180 degrees in the middle, passed the finish line facing backwards, slowed down enough that the wheels (still spinning forward) got enough traction to accelerate back UP the track towards the start line, collided on the track with chase car driven by son. Crazy.

Howard got off to a good start, but what happened next will have drag-racing people shaking their heads in disbelief for years to come. About halfway down the quarter-mile course, the nose of her dragster got airborne, lifted straight up into what is called a "blowover wheelstand," and while continuing to roar down the track standing on its tail, turned 180 degrees and came down with tremendous force, now facing the starting line. It is likely Howard was knocked unconscious.

there may or may not be a dead man's switch on the drag racers but she was probably knocked out from the "blowover wheelstand."

With the magic of MS Paint, we can see what happened. (Huge image... low file size).

Keep in mind this entire scene probably happened in approximately 13 seconds.

I got that part, too - I was just trying to point out the part that I thought was different. :)
