More like, 15 years of a Glorius Career.

His stint with the Raiders, Seahawks and Broncos were meh. Once he left the Niners, he should have retired.

38 NFL records, including those for career receptions (1,549), yards receiving (22,895) and touchdowns receiving (197).

I think he shares or holds 45 total.

no his career was glorious, he could have played another 4 yrs as a pitiful backup and it would still be a glorious career.

the op didn't say that every year of that glorious career was glorious, just that rice had a career of 20 yrs that was glorious.

Rice retires after 20-year NFL career

DENVER (AP) - The greatest receiver of all time realized he would be no better than the fourth receiver for the Denver Broncos. It was no way for Jerry Rice to end his career, so he called it quits after 20 sensational seasons.

I have great respect for a man who, while he sure bounced around enough during his past few years, at least went out with respect, instead of with a whimper. 🙂
I also have incredible respect for him as a sportsman. While a lot of guys lay back during the off season, he continued working out, and kept himself in great shape year round. I heard one time that during the off season, he jogged 10 miles a day, every day. Geez, that's more in one week than I've done in my entire life!! LOL

Good on ya, Jerry. Enjoy your retirement!

Rice was almost MVP of one game for the Seahawks, had they not blown the lead, with almost 200 yards receiving last year.......and freaking Shanahan can't even be bothered keep him active for every game? Why did they pick him up? F'rs.

I remember watching his first games...couldn't figure out why the kept feeding him the ball when he kept dropping them. 😀

His career is one of the most amazing in the history of the NFL.

Aside from being hands-down the greatest receiver, his longevity is remarkable, made possible by lots of luck and probably one of the hardest work ethics in the game.

Rice is and was the man, he ended his career very honorably. Not to mention how much of a class act he was on the field.

From ESPN article....
He played 303 games, caught 1,549 passes for 22,895 yards and had 197 touchdown receptions.

Think about those numbers for a second. Rice averaged 77 catches a season for 20 years. Randy Moss, Terrell Owens and Marvin Harrison are considered the game's best active receivers, but what they'd have to do to catch Rice is staggering. Moss has 574 catches and would have to average 100 catches a year for the next 10 years to catch Rice. That means he would have to play until he was 38. Harrison has 845 catches and he's 33. To catch Rice, he would have to average 101 catches a year the next seven years and retire at the age of 40. Owens, who has 669 catches would have to average 100 receptions for close to nine seasons to get there.

The man was a phenom.

Too bad he'll be in the hall as a BRONCO.

Mark May said that SF should sign him to a 1 day $1 contract and have him file for official retirement with them. I agree.

And each of those active players have played for outstanding quarterbacks as well, so that argument against rice's stats should pretty much be dismissed.

Jerry Rice is the greatest wide receiver to have ever played, IMHO. to Jerry Rice.
Agreed. In my post above when I said he wasn't the greatest ever, that was in reference to me hearing yesterday someone saying he was the greatest to play at any position, ever. Not the greatest of all positions, but the best WR, definitely.

I am glad you clarified, because I was going to flame you into oblivion!

He won't go in as a Bronco. Players get to choose which team they represent when they get inducted.

Right, players only do that so they can retire as a player for the team they played most of their career at (like Randall Cunningham and the Eagles...)

I was under the impression that they did not have a choice at all. Hopefully he decides to go in as a 49er.

Yeah, it would be kind of absurd to induct him as anything other than a Niner.
