edit: Actually, are you guys sure about that? Looks like thiomersal hasn't been used (in childhood vaccines, at least) for many years.

Yes I have read the CDC info, however it is still out there...read the label to be sure.

edit: if you look at the FDA charts, many still contain mercury.

1 in 133 children have autism now right? If vaccinations have increased, wouldn't that rate increase as well if McCarthy is right? So anyone know what the autism rate was before vaccinations multiplied?

Autism diagnosis rates were lower 10-20 years ago.

Once again that is correlation not causation.

In every study that looked at vaccinations and autism, there is zero causation. Once of the reasons autism diagnosis rates have increased is from better awareness. That doesn't account for the total increase however. The real cause of autism increases is currently unknown. However it is known that vaccines are the not the cause.

Also, was just messing around on Google and came by this page. Seems to have some pretty good evidence against a link between autism and mercury.

In addition, several other pieces of information add to the reassurance provided by these studies:

* In 1971 Iraq imported grain that had been fumigated with methylmercury. Farmers ate bread made from this grain. The result was one of the worst, single-source, mercury poisonings in history. Methylmercury in the grain caused the hospitalization of 6,500 Iraqis and killed 450. Pregnant women also ate the bread and delivered babies with epilepsy and mental retardation. But they didn?t deliver babies with an increased risk of autism.

* Studies of the head size, speech patterns, vision, coordination and sensation of children poisoned by mercury show that the symptoms of mercury poisoning are clearly different from the symptoms of autism.

* Methylmercury is found in low levels in water, infant formula and breast milk. Although it is clear that large quantities of mercury can damage the nervous system, there is no evidence that the small quantities contained in water, infant formula and breast milk do. An infant who is exclusively breastfed will ingest more than twice the quantity of mercury that was ever contained in vaccines and fifteen times the quantity of mercury contained in the influenza vaccine.

Correlation vs causation.

Global temperature has been rising steadily with the decrease in pirates worldwide, so obviously we need more pirates to cool it back down.

But what levels of mercury though? I doubt most parents would second guess feeding their child tuna despite of the mercury levels in it.

Might be a tricky question to answer. It wouldn't surprise me if the ability to correctly diagnose autism (whose symptoms seem to range from one extreme to the other) has increased along with or after the growth of vaccine usage.

no matter what else is said in this thread...I find this stat very troubling..🙁

While that's a considerably exaggerated example, your point is made. However, with something that's flaunted in the media as a magical period of each year that everyone will get the flu and burst into flame and turn into zombies and kill everyone else if they don't get the flu shot, it's not hard to come to the conclusion that getting a shot consisting of something dead and then experiencing symptoms that the something-dead often gives you (whether it's the flu or a cold or whatever else) may be related. We're not all Ph.-fucking-D.'s here. We're not dog stupid, either, but still 😛

It is a reasonable conclusion that getting a shot weakens you enough for something else to attack, if not the very thing you're getting a vaccine for so some people may not want to get a shot in the first place. Especially if they don't otherwise get the flu or colds anyway 😎

As a parent, I wouldn't dream of serving canned tuna to young children

As far as the whole thimerasol thing; is it so hard to ask to read the label of any vaccine that someone is about to inject into your child?

A little caution doesn't hurt a thing; mercury-free formulations are available, just make sure that's what you are getting.

If someone's figured out how to make a flu vaccine without using mercery and other dangerous crap, why are others continuing to manufacture and distribute the mercery vaccines? 😕

Okay, I looked up pics of Jenny McCarthy since I have no idea who she is outside of her anti-vaccine crusade. WTF? Call me a lookist or brunettist but who the hell would take anything she says seriously? She just looks plain dumb, both of them.

Why the fuck would anyone get a flu shot? Most worthless vaccine ever. Everyone I know who gets flu shots always comes down with something immediately after whether it be the flu or a cold. Conversely, I've never had a flu shot in my life and I get the flu about once every 7-8 years on average.

I've never really gotten the flu. Am I fucked? :Q

That said, never been vaccinated either. Didn't really seem worth it.

Well I suppose thats what bothers me so much. Being a nurse and all. But its amazing how many of my patients DONT want get a flu or pneumonia(when they qualify for one) and their primary reason is 'vaccines arent safe'

I get sick every time I get a flu shot. I don't get sick when I don't get them. I stopped getting flu shots years ago and haven't had the flu since.

The flu shot doesnt cause you to get the flu... sure you can have a mild illness for a couple days but its more due to the immune response. I got the flu shot every year I was in college and was one of the few people NOT to get the flu whenever it chose to rampage through my dorm

So basically you're agreeing with me. Good. In cases where the patient has a weaker immune system, they may end up with a prolonged illness.

Read the side effects of the vaccine. Its more common in the nasal versions. But like I said its not 'THE FLU' its more your bodies reaction to the virus...the body aches, fever for a day or two. Its nothing like the flu itself. But any vaccine where you receive the weaken version of the virus can cause that reaction, but what it does for your body...ramping up your immune response so you don't get the true illness.

There are contraindications to vaccines and being immunocompromised is one of them. For example someone with HIV that has a normal CD4 count can get vaccines, however if their CD4 is extremely low or they begin to show signs/symptoms of full blown AIDS they won't get the vaccine. And weaker immune system is kind of a vague term. And no they shouldn't get a prolonged illness from a vaccine. Again going back to the flu, the nasal flu vaccine is a weakened version of the virus, the shot is usually just the bits of protein/RNA they will cause an immune response from your body. The latter wont make ill asides from injection site reaction(pain/swelling) The nasal you can get the fever/achey/runny nose for a couple days. But thats NORMAL it even says it in the package insert. The chance of prolonged illness is exceedingly rare.

But I have a feeling that no matter my response you'll twist my words.

So to that, I've said my peace.

Vaccinate your children. The flu shot is a personal choice but childhood vaccinations should always be given.

Um, no he's not.

1. It is impossible for the flu shot to cause the flu.

2. The MILD immune response to the dead virus is just that, MILD. It is rare and at WORST a very low grade fever and lasts a day or two. An actual flu infection comes with a high fever and lasts an average of 10 days.

Mild or not, you get the flu. How is getting a fever for a few days better than no fever at all?

3. The weaker the immune system, the weaker the response to the shot. So as to your last sentence, it is 100% incorrect. People with weakened immune systems are LESS likely to have mild, short duration symptoms after getting the shot than those with strong immune systems.

So why not just give them no shot at all? After all, the flu evolves so fast you have to keep getting shots every year to avoid the most recent strain.

4. Getting the shot not only protects you, but those around you. The people you infect could very well have weakened immune systems and die from a flu infection.

If those around me need to be protected from the flu, then they can count on themselves to go get a damn shot. I don't give two shits about the person next to me. I get the flu when I get a flu shot. I don't get the flu when I don't get a flu shot. Fuck everyone else, I'm not going to go get a shot, and then the flu, just so some asshole can sleep better at night thinking there's 1 less person out of 6,000,000,000 others that he might get the flu from.

As for the effectiveness? Yes, some years they predict incorrectly, but those are in the minority. Last year was a bad year and the shot was largely ineffective. This year is a good year with better than 70% effectiveness.

Get the damn shot and stop being a disease spreader.

Heh. No. 🙂

How ignorant are you? It is NOT an influenza infection and therefore not the flu, Nik. It is a mild immune response to the vaccine: A DEAD virus. A low grade fever is nothing. Think of it as the low grade fevers women get every month when they ovulate. It's rare, and at worst, very mild.

Yes, you do have to get one every year. So what?

You haven't got the flu from the shot Nik. It's a physical impossibility. It's like claiming you caught lunacy from the moon.

In fact, I'll bet you caught a bad cold weeks later and thought it was the flu as most who blame flu shots for illnesses do. Even more comical, I'll bed you've blamed a stomach virus on it too.

It's called community responsibility, Nik. That's why we ALL got shots for Small Pox. If enough people got flu shots in a single season, no one would get the flu.

In short, your fears and claims are based on nothing but ignorance. Sorry.

Because the miniscule quantities of mercury aren't "dangerous crap", any more than dihydrogen monoxide is a deadly substance (even though it does kill thousands of people a year). If the vaccines had tiny amounts of ethyl alcohol (a known poison), would you still be worried?

Vaccine manufacturers are eliminating mercury for the sake of soothing the panicky masses, not because they think it actually causes problems. Or, if it does, they are nothing compared to the risks of the disease...it's as if you're serving bread at a refugee camp where people are starving to death, and it turns out that one of the refugees has a wheat allergy.

That's a good point...and the increased activities of the Somali pirates in recent months HAS occurred simultaneously with lower-than-expected temperatures and better sea ice levels for this year.

Coincidence? I think not!

By the way, earlier this year, the government paid out damages to a couple who had sued over a child who's autism they claimed was caused by vaccines. While there was no admittance of causation, you can bet your ass the government doesn't pay out over a million dollars out of the goodness of it's heart...

One out of 5,263 cases and there was no proof of casuastion

so you think the gov't just decided to give them money for no reason?

and one case is too many if that case is your child...

*sigh* no admission of cause means just that. The government, for whatever reason, good or bad decided it would be cheaper to pay out. That is NOT scientific evidence, and legal precedent certainly doesn't fly in the face of scientific evidence. You're confusing law with reality again. Bad Mikey. Bad. <bop on the nose with a rolled newspaper>

Not really. You just made that up, as far as I can tell, without sources. Last time I checked, vaccines don't suppress the immune system, they include inactive ingredients to STIMULATE the immune system's response.

Exactly.

People who refuse to understand the most basic concepts of science -- stuff that they should have gotten from their 8th grade science book -- shouldn't be allowed to vote. That kind of ignorance doesn't deserve to have a say in the future of humanity.

Made what up? I took health class in junior high 😛

The immune system doesn't take a hit at all after a vaccination? It isn't slightly more likely that you'll catch something after getting a vaccine? So people who do get a short-lived low grade fever just happened to catch something else that they would have caught even if they didn't receive the vaccine? Absolutely coincidental?
