You are missing a LONG series of events in between the 2 you named. They are upset at the fact that when white kids beat up black kids, they got off scot free, but when its the other way around they are tried as adults.
Agreed, but you have to also admit that when 6 black kids beat up 1 white kid is school violence, but if 6 white kids beat up 1 black kid it would be a violent hate crime.
There is plenty enough double standards to go around here.
Well, why wasn't it for the black kid that was beaten up?
The black kid was beaten up at a party by one person who wasn't even a student of Jena HS. The kid didn't even seek medical attention, so it's pretty much hearsay.
Mychal Bell, who is the only one of the Jena 6 that has been in court so far, was tried as an adult and convicted of assault and conspiracy to commit assault. Doesn't matter what the charges were, the conviction was EXACTLY what every one seems to think he was guilty of.
As for being tried as an adult, well Bell has a laundry list of prior offenses. At what point do you decide that enough is enough? I would say that 3 prior criminal offenses is enough proof that a juvenile is ready for the big show. It's all moot now that the conviction has been overruled, but I firmly believe that Bell deserved what he originally got. The rest of the 6 may deserve a bit of leeway. I don't know what, if any, crimes they have committed in the past.
