CARROLLTON, Texas -- A teenager who was charged in the Jena 6 case was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a fellow student in Carrollton on Wednesday morning.

Bryant Purvis faces a misdemeanor assault charge.

Purvis is one of six black students who were accused of beating a white student in Louisiana. Many people questioned the severity of the attempted murder charges the teenagers faced, calling it racism.

Purvis, a 19-year-old senior, recently moved to Carrollton to concentrate on his studies and basketball. Tina Jones, Purvis? mother, said Purvis beat up a student after he was told the student had slashed his tires the night before.

"I wish he could just get in a place where he could walk away from the situation," Jones said of her son. "I understand he gets frustrated. But he needed to walk away from this situation, being that he's already in a situation. It's very frustrating and upsetting to have to go through so much."

Purvis' car, with a Louisiana license tag and deflated tires, was still sitting in the school's parking lot Wednesday night.

In November, Purvis pleaded not guilty to second-degree aggravated battery and conspiracy in the racially charged Jenna 6 case, which drew national attention.

Classmates said Purvis came to Texas to stay out of trouble and the spotlight.

Purvis came to Carrollton to live with his uncle, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Jason Hatcher. Hatcher said he has no comment on his nephew's arrest.

Purvis faces a charge of aggravated second-degree battery. He was released from the Denton County jail on $1,000 bond Thursday morning.

With regards to the OP's question:
Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are seriously of the belief that blacks cannot be racist.
Anything bad they do is the result of some other force, usually anger at being oppressed for 200 years.

Considering the original case was about the severity of the charges and not about his innocence I don't see why this should come as a surprise.

The kid sounds like a loser, but it also sounds like the guy he beat up deserved it.

I'm just surprised the national media hasn't jumped on this yet. They'd kill for a story like this.

How so? Generally in the news, whites beating blacks is newsworthy (in part because of the attention guys like Sharpton help bring to the case). A black youth beating up a white guy isn't necessarily newsworthy, even in this context.

(Note: I'm not saying I agree with it, but, much like white women are newsworthy kidnap subjects for the media, the above applies)

Yeah, that too.
(assuming the kid actually slashed his tires, which we have no way to know)

if every fight that happened in highschool was put into the news, we would have newspapers thicker than dictionaries.

this isn't even newsworthy.

If it had happened to any other kid, I would agree. But because it happened to one of the Jena 6 it is.

except that they consider progressive politicians like Obama and Newark's Mayor Booker to be racists. One of the reasons I support Obama is that he could potentially make these nutjobs irrelevant.

He is 19 and an adult. The kid he beat up was probably still a juvenile.

Tough situation, I'd want to kick the tire slasher's ass too, but the Jena kid needs to learn that he can't just do whatever he feels like...

Fight 1 on 1 is not a big deal. A gang of thugs (6 to be exact ) that gang up on 1 guy then knock him out cold then stomp on him is a big deal.

How would the blacks feel if 6 whites (one of them is a football player WITH not one but SEVERAL crimminal records) or any other races gang up on 1 skinny black guy and beat him up until he is out cold then stomp on him ?

That's what I have a problem with.

Ok then, if you have a criminal trial coming up, you wouldn't go out and beat up someone else, would you? The article didn't say that guy was the guy that slash/mess up the car. Even if that guy did it, you can't just go out and beat him. We have the things call law and order.
