At what age would you begin leaving your children alone for short periods? I know I was at home alone at that age (not for very long periods, maybe just a few hours at a time) on occasions. I think it is OK. You have to give kids some opportunities to develop some independence. I wonder why there wasn't a safety screen or safety latch type thing on the door.
