I've got 137000 on my '97 wrangler with the 4.0 liter i-6. So far, I've replaced the alternator and the radiator... but other than that just general oil/filter changes, tuneups, and brake pads...

Planning on doing a lot of off-road driving?... If so its a good choice & if not don't even consider it.
Wranglers have a rough & bouncy ride, get poor gas milage, in cold weather you'll feel like your half outdoors & they arn't well made, there very noisy & the convertible can be broken into in 5 seconds flat, plus the back seat is a joke.

I love em, but they are built for specific purposes. And why are so many people saying they get poor gas mileage? they get like 26-28mpg, for what they do that's stellar, hell, my cherokee gets 26mpg and it weighs some 1500lbs more than the wranglers. (only thing I can figure is you that think that's poor gas mileage must be young tree huggers that have a hybrid or micro-car)

They are extremely reliable, they are built for off roading, if you don't take them off roading they require pretty much basic maintance. (if you get a 4x4 and don't use the 4x4 capability, be sure you put it into gear occasionally to keep the transfer case and front diff used, if you never plan to use the 4x4 capability, buy a 2x4)

Cherokees weigh in less than Wranglers by as much as 800lbs, depending on how they are equipped.

And there is no way in hell you have ever gotten 26MPG. The best I ever did with my Cherokee was 22, I average about 12-13MPG in my Wrangler.

Actually I should have specified the 4.0 liter six cylinders get really bad gas milage... the smaller six's arn't as bad & the older fours wern't bad at all considering what they are.

If you get one just be sure not to turn into one of those Jeep idiots that think they're invincible and have big stickers about how you're so much better than a Hummer.

What smaller sixes? Chrysler offered a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder or a 4.0 liter 6 cylinder. There are no other engines in recent years.

Maybe he means 3.7L? That won't be in the Wrangler until 2007.

There is no such thing as a 4x2 Jeep Wrangler.
And your gas mileage statement is pure BS.

Talk out of your ass much?

When you own a Cherokee or a Wrangler, you're gold. Parts are cheap, but they tend to have a lot of small problems.

I used to have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport. My factory battery, for instance....didn't even last 4 years. I had to replace 3 window motors. There were occasional rattles coming from the exhaust housing. Other than that, it was pretty decent. The gas milage was between 16-20mpg... Wranglers have the same basic engine and similar quality issues. It's not bad if you get a good deal on one. You can buy those 4L engines for like $850-900 brand new.

I didn't say 2x4 wrangler now did I? (can't someone generalize about the difference between 4x4 and 4x2s?), and yes my Cherokee 2001 Sport gets 26mpg. 4.0l straight 6 4x2 auto-trans. A friend of mine and his mom both had Wranglers with the 2.5? liter with a 5-speed (strait 4 whatever that was in that year) in it, I think it was a 96 or 97 model he got 26-28mpg on it. now stuff it up your own ass next time you insult people. (only thing I missed was current models apperantly don't get as good of gas mileage as they used to)

note: First time I've insulted someone back on these forums in a loooong time. I will not continue this further outside of PM's

I love my 89 sahara wrangler. I get 19-20 mpg highway.

Pros:
Fun as hellll!!
Easy to fix and maintain. (got my death wobble fixed a couple weeks ago)
They improve you image..for ruggedness :D
In-town driving, they are semi-small and very quick (mine is anyway).
You get to join the unspoken Jeep club.

Cons:
Not the best for long drives (I drive between tulsa and rolla often)
They are noisy, vinyl top will overpower stock speakers at 80 mph. (yes, I do drive that fast....turnpike)
Gas mileage isn't great, but not Hummer bad (9mpg).

I will warn you, as soon as you get one. You will never want to get to rid of it, unless you are completely a wuss and unable to handle the sheer awsomeness of a great vehicle.

btw, my daily commute takes me above 65mph and it doesn't bother me.

Awsome pics of the '07 !!!

Jeeps are great and not much has really changed (1980-2000) on them. They are like a tank and good luck ever getting stuck in the mud with one because they are the best 4x4's on the market IMO.

My only suggestion to you is if looking for one make sure it has the 4.0l Straight 6 engine. Not the 4, v6, or 8. The straight 6 is bullet proof and will get 300K+ on here if maintained properly. I owned a CJ7 (1977) and just got my wife a 1998 Cherokee and am very happy with them. My only complaint is the Cherokee was made for very small people. Im 6'4 400lbs and it is ver hard for me to get in and out of it. Not mainly my weight being a problem (mostly muscle from being a brick wall before getting hurt and was 350 with hardly any fat) but the height. Small door openings and not much cab or head room. Head is on the celing and knees are in the dash. But this wasnt supposed to be my car its my wifes who is 5'2" and fits very nice in it. I on the other hand fit great in my 97 Ford SHO :D

But if your looking for a dependable, great fun to take off road vechile then a Jeep Wrangler or Cherokee ONLY with the 4.0l inline 6 is the way to go. With that engine and nothing too new the parts are a dime a dozen and fairly easy to work on yourself.
