Jeep Wrangler Owners: Pros and Cons

Spooner

Lifer
I'm looking to buy a cheaper Jeep Wrangler to have some fun in while I save up and get a nicer car later and I'd like to ask a few questions of Wrangler owers:

- How easy/pain in the ass is it to take the top on and off?
- How does a sound system sound? What if a sound bar is added?
- Where can you put valuables when you park and you have the roof down?
- Can someone that's never driven stick learn on a wrangler?
- Is the gas mileage as bad as I hear it is?

1. Easy to do after some practice. Takes maybe 5 minutes to put down and 10 minutes to put back up, by yourself.

2. Sounds system sucks with the sound bar, is horrific without.

3. There is a locking glove box and center console, but you really want to store stuff there, get Tuffy branded replacements. All metal instead of plastic.

4. Sure, it's probably easier than many vehicles because the I6 has a lot of torque.

5. After doing some repairs, ours is up to 15-16MPG, but that is with tires 6" taller than stock and it has been regeared. Expect 20 or so, it is shaped like a box, after all.

I've been interested in Wanglers now for a little while. I'd also like to hear some input from owners.

But learning to drive a stick on a Wrangler wouldn't be any harder than on any other vehical. It's really not that bad (I learned on a 1982 BMW, now I drive a 95 Mitsu Mighty Max stick) and it's going to be different on every car that you drive.

And I hear about 20mpg mixed driving for the 4 bangers, and 15-18 for the 6s. I'd really like to get a 6 and start doing some off roading and whatnot, but the gas is outragous now 🙁

How much ooomf does the 2.5 liter 4 have? Would you be screwed offroad with it?

The 2.5L has been retired in favor of the 2.4, which is a HUGELY better engine. The best way to describe the 2.5L is craptastic. It's got a short lifespan, is underpowered, and is a high polluter.

this ain't no chicks jeep!

I don't know when I think wrangler I immediatly think of a red wrangler with a blonde chick with long hair driving it. Either a surfer girl or cowgirl.

I think of Daisy Duke in her jeep from the show 🙂
I had at one time in my youth, a 1977 Jeep CJ7 with a 301 v8. I had a ton of fun and as far as keeping stuff in it, well, think of it as a bike with 4 wheels and dont keep anything in it.
Its mainly for the ride, wind in your hair, and going 4 wheeling in. Not hauling crap.

You mean 304, unless that 301 was swapped in. 😉

Which is bad how?

Have you ever been driving down the highway, seen a sparkly red wrangler, think "oh hot chick in this one", only to pass it in disgust as you see an overwieght middle aged man eating a burrito behind the wheel?

wow.... i guess it is typical... i am that girl you just described 😀 bondie driving a TJ!

😉

Wranglers are fun vehicles. The best thing and worst thing about them is that they can go anywhere as long as the getting there is slow.

- How easy/pain in the ass is it to take the top on and off?

Older CJ's (>86) kind of a pain
YJ's (87-95) not too bad, although the snaps above the doors can get annoying, as can the groove above the windshield
TJ's (97-present) very easy to take down. easy for 2 people to put up. not too bad for 1 person

- How does a sound system sound? What if a sound bar is added?

sound system sucks. if you try to put a good one in, it WILL be stolen

- Where can you put valuables when you park and you have the roof down?

you can get Tuffy storage boxes .. metal and lockable. anything not bolted down will be stolen

- Can someone that's never driven stick learn on a wrangler?

I've driven both I6 and 4 banger wranglers. Both are very easy to drive.

- Is the gas mileage as bad as I hear it is?

even with a 4 popper, don't expect much more than 20.

The 2.5's in the YJ's and TJ's aren't bad at all. I had a 4 popper in my 95 YJ and it was a great little motor. It turned 33's OK even with stock gearing .. except up long hills. 😛

They were never meant to be fast really. Besides, if you want more power, you can always supercharge it.

Edit: BTW, if you want this as a daily driver you should know that the TJ's (97+) are way more civilized than the YJ's. I love my '89, but the ride quality is pretty rough.

Damn your right my 77 firebird had the 301 and the cj7 had the 304. My bad and thanks for clearing that up 🙂

I do. I sold my Wrangler when I moved to NY. I didn't want to take a 7 hour drive in that monster. It wasn't meant for the highway.
