Am I crazy for suddenly having an urge to own a Jeep Wrangler? I'm suddenly drawn to the simple/purpose built nature of this vehicle. I really wish they could put out one with a diesel that got somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-27mpg. I have to say though, the new 3.6L seems to be quite an improvement over the old engine.

If I wasn't so unsure about where I will be living in the next 2-3 years, I would be very tempted to pick one of these up...at least a used one as a second car.

I would not buy it while I'm still here in Florida. It would definitely be if I moved back to South Carolina or finally made it out to California like I've been wanting to for years now (company keeps messing with my plans). So yes, I wouldn't buy it until I had reason to use it. Part of the reason this came up is that I was up on SC a week ago and I drove with a friend to some new property that he bought and we did some offroading in his jeep to get to some trails he started for mtn. biking. It made me miss my old Tacoma a little and really got me hankering for a simple jeep.

Jeeps are awesome. Just PLEASE don't put a "It's a Jeep thing...you just wouldn't understand" sticker on it.

Which is certainly nice...and I don't mind the mild bump in economy...but what would really get me interested is if the dropped a decent diesel in there. I'm honestly not looking for anything more than adequate speed in car like that.

Well, the pentastar has also added the much needed torque and good torque curve back to it as well for off roading.

For a 4 cylinder diesel Wrangler you just need to buy one from across the pond.

Well there is a 60+% chance that my company will be moving me to one of our European offices...so if that does happen...I might just have to. I wonder how hard it would be to import back to the states. I'm sure not easy...not to mention not wanting a vehicle where I have to order engine parts across the pond when it breaks regularly.

I have faith that Fiat will sell a Wrangler with a diesel here in the states. I definitely agree with you that the Pentastar is the engine to get...it would keep me from wanting to get a used one.

UK Wrangler's diesel:

2.8 CRD engine.
Impressive 2.8 DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder
Common-Rail Diesel (CRD) engine pumps out 197
bhp at 3600 rpm and 460 Nm of torque at 1600
rpm (with automatic transmission).
The fuel-saving Stop-Start System is standard on
vehicles equipped with the diesel engine and
manual transmission.

It's 410tq with the 6 speed manual.

It gets about 40mpg hwy using the Euro gallon, so something like 30 for the US?

Bought one new in 1987. Loved it. Had friends at Mt Pleasant. I.o.P. here I come.

However, the damn thing stayed in the shop. Dumped it after 3 years.

23 years old vs 47. Hmmmm. Life is good but I'd like to roll back some of the mileage.


Bought a Prelude in 1990. Had it for 19 wonderful years. Tacoma quad cab, now.
