Jeep problems

I have a '98 Jeep Cherokee, engine light just went on...

There supposedly is a way to check the diagnostic code by turning the battery power on and off 3 times (the code shows up where the mileage is)

Anyone know the proper way to do this or a reference place to tell me how?

Didn't you JUST buy it?
Make sure you tightened the gas cap all the way. And it's probably not the battery power, but the key back and forth (but not all the way into the start position)

Then you'll need to hit troublecodes.net for the analysis, but hopefully it's just the gas cap code. Minor emissions error or something like that.

Buy OBD II code reader and hook it to car and read stored code FTW
I have one of these and all the code indicated that several cylinders were misfiring. Boy did that help me out😀isgust

farmercal

Cylinder misfire is just the beginning of the diagnostic procedure,if you have multiple cylinder misfires then you will have to go into the PIDS section of your scanner, read the live streaming data and watch for incorrect MAF,MAP or fuel pressure fluctuations.
If you just have a cheapo read code only scanner, then you are SOL.

Once the codes are retrieved, you can look them up here.

i made sure to tighten gas cap. - the engine light wont turn off until a few cycles though, correct?
yes i just bought it, its under warranty from guy, but he is an hours drive away....

also ive been told that the key trick might not work because '96 + year jeeps switched to ODB ll and they might want you to come to the dealer for service...

any thoughts?

"98 is OBII,this requires either a cheapo code reader or a decent scanner, both of which can be purchased at Auto Zone or your local auto parts dealer.

I live in America,here we speak english,what the hell is 13h ? 🙂🙂😀

Go buy the cheapo code reader, about $25

its t3h, not 13h....as in "teh" which further translates in "the"

"teh cheap" is an expression i've heard commonly enough

I don't know if it's the case with Jeep's...but I know that some cars will have the check engine light come on every so many miles and when they change oil they are supposed to reset the ECU for that....may not be the case though, I dunno.

Key it on-off-on-off-on

note I said on, not start. The info will appear on the odo.

This will work, the check engine light will flash the code...

code 12 would be light on, of, pause light on, off on

there is a longer pause between each code.

just take it to autozone. They will tell you the diagnosis. Make sure you write down the code number and tell the jeep forum guys.
