I tend to go the other way with the engine rebuild thing...as in, why pay the absurd salvage yard prices on used engines when you can put the same into machining and parts for a rebuild. You'd never squeeze in the labor, though.

I'm thinking you'd probably get quoted anywhere between 600-1200 for a used one with OHMYGAWD 30 DAY WARRANTY! I hate that crap. I could make piston rings out of my own feces and probably have it run for a month. The trick is NOT pulling the engine again within the year.

A few years ago, I would've been more open to used engines and transmissions, but as I said, salvage yards seem to have watched gold prices go up and assumed that's what their crap was made of...

Bought a 2.4L 4cyl 5spd liberty, which is rare in itself. seemed to of run fine for some time then had a random power loss, never would start back up.

Took it to local shop, we pulled the plugs, noticed one was stuck and very good, we got it out in the end but not sure what happened. Tested for compression and the motor had almost zero across the board in all cylinders! Opened it up and the tops of the pistons were heavily damaged and the mechanic said they were hitting the plugs somehow? I've honestly never heard of this, but anyhow....

What do I do? I can't find a motor for this car on the cheap. Looked at a Neon 2.4L but it was too different other than the base block.

How about a Wrangler 2.4L?

I'm open the suggestions and thoughts, maybe something outside the box? I only paid 2400 bucks for the car, so much for a supposed steal I thought I got.
Sometimes
Depends how bad the heads are too tho, if the bent valves damaged the heads...
sometimes when you don't replace plugs and use low octaines gasoline you get engine knocking. Little pieces of aluminum in the head become red hot and when you stop the engine , it will start backwards knocking piston on plugs causing a un repairable damage
