Depends on how old your springs are (They sag over time). But 29" sound about right. If you add a 2.5" lift (A good one with shocks and new coils), you could add 31's.

On the head unit, don't spend too much on one since it's easy to break in. Look for a good Panasonic or Alpine unit.

You could fit 30" tires if your leafs are sagging, which I would bet they are.

I have one that is cheap that is made by Ilo, it reads discs as well as sd cards, I would suggest you find one with a sd slot for it will not skip at all, ever.

But since trying to find one in your price range with sd play back will be dificult I suggest to look at these perhaps:

I personally wish to replace my unit with this one when I get the funds to do so. $172 doesnt seem bad, I have their speakers and they sound great.
I need to mention this one has no MP3 or WMA playback but has 2 sents of AV inputs so you can hook up a outside MP3 source, but the cool part really is that it has a built in tv tuner.

Then there is this one.

This one for $126

This one for $117 that has Ipod hook ups, if you have one you can hook it up for no skipping.

And here is one that reads DVD's, you can put on 4.7 gig worth of MP3's and never have to change the disk for a year. $164.

Granted however if the do still skip, they all have anti skip but the bumpiest of rides may still make them skip, I am sure they have inputs you can hook up a external SD MP3 player to them or hook up a FM modulator and run off that thru them if need be if skipping is still a problem.

I had a 95 YJ. It had a 4.5" spring lift and 33's. The Pioneer deck in it did really well. No skipping until I started bouncing over rocks.

You can put 30x9.50's on a stock YJ. You might even be able to squeeze 31x10.50's.

I'd recommend a 3" or so lift and 32's. YJ lifts are cheap and really easy to install since they only involve leaf springs and shocks.

I picked up a Kenwood KDC-X890 for my 99 Sahara a few months back. It's now discontinued for the 891 but it's still available here and there. Crutchfield link and Ebay auction for $229. It's got a USB plug off the back I ran to the glove box where I have a 20GB 2.5" drive hooked to it filled w mp3's, I got an ipod cable for around $40 though I rarely use it with the other drive always being available. Haven't had any problems with it skipping even while off-road.

This post is making me pine for my old Land Cruiser :(

'73 FJ40, desert beige, a little beat up, 33s, LT1 350 & a 400 turbo. Had to give 'er up to pay off a lawyer for some early 20s trouble. :frown:

I'll have another old FJ some day.

Edit: a little more on-topic, I used a marine radio in my old toy - was always getting wet. Didn't have CDs back then, though...
