Capacity was NOT the same. The 5.9L(available in 1998 only) had a rating of 5,000lbs, correct, but a 5.2L has a rating of 6,700lbs. Look on MSN Autos. the 4.0L had a higher towing capacity than the 5.9L. And it was all because of the cooling fan.

An electrical fan cannot cool off the engine as well as a mechanical can, but you can eliminate more parasitic power loss. Most other parts of the 5.2L and 5.9L are the same, including dimensions, for the most part. Space was not the issue, because many people swap mechanical fans into their 5.9Ls.
Cars Direct said it was the same. In addition, the 5.9 had more horsepower.

It's bull to say an electric fan can't cool as well...maybe that particular fan they used didn't get it done, but an electric most certainly can do the same job, if not better.

Beside, the fan only makes a difference if you're at slow speeds, such as in town. Going down the road at highway speeds, the fan is irrelevant.

Either way, you'd be crazy to hook up that much weight to a small truck like that, whether it's 5000 or 6700 lbs. Manufacturers are doing the public a real disservice by rating these trucks so high.
Just like the new F-150 can supposedly tow up to 9200lbs or something ridiculous like that. Riiiggght.

5000lbs is borderline for a 1/2 ton truck, and I don't care what they are rated for. You need to have some ass in front of that load.
