Yeah...but it wasn't a clean diesel. I think that will make a difference in my opinion. Just look at how the X5, Q7, and Mercedes diesels have been selling. I think this is Jeep's opportunity to grab some of that market.

There were bluetec Grand Cherokees being tested back then too, iirc. I guess they never went ahead with them.

I think more people talk about wanting a diesel daily driver, than actually buy them. Probably because of the price of the fuel.

Well I just know that my wife want's a diesel touareg because it is relatively clean/good gas mileage for the size/safety that you get. I'm interested, but I feel it is too expensive to buy/maintain (especially with its not so stellar reliability record). A Grand Cherokee might not be much more reliable, but I'm certain I could get a stripper much closer to 35K than the 48k the Touareg costs. I also think maintenance down the road will be a lot cheaper.

How is VM Motori for reliability?

Didn't they make the 4 cylinder diesel in the Liberty?

I think that the purchase cost is a big turn off for many people. The cost of getting a diesel passenger vehicle in the US can add a decent amount to the cost.

Nope.

I was just in Europe and had a Range Rover Sport for a month with a diesel in it. The car was simply amazing, and talk about good fuel economy too...

If they offered diesels here I'd buy one.

Depends. The new ML is only like 1 grand more for the diesel.

That's a bit odd, typically a diesel is a much more price option. I'm wondering if Mercedes is cutting its profit margin on its diesel vehicles to sell more and improve its fleet average fuel economy.

It's weird how few vehicles are diesel in the US. There's a huge range of diesel vehicles here.

Remember back like 10 years or so ago when Diesel was half the price of regular gasoline? Then people started buying Diesel vehicles and the oil companies were like, "We're not gonna take it!" and then made it more expensive?

I guess that explains why diesel is still cheaper than gas in europe, and they have way more diesel cars. I figure personal cars are a drop in the bucket on overall diesel consumption in north america anyway... How many TDIs can you fuel for a year with what one container ship needs, or a 747? (yeah, heavy fuel oil and jet-a ain't quite diesel).

But that's besides the point anyway. Even if they were the same price, diesel still wins on efficiency.

No.

Diesel is more expensive here because of refining capacity mostly.

Our refineries are not geared toward diesel production.

It's nearly impossible to revamp a refinery these days, and building a new one is just about out of the question.

Emissions regs pretty much killed diesels here. We did not have low-sulfur diesel fuel until recently.

It also was, and may still be, tough to get a diesel past California's CARB.

No I don't remember that. I remember diesel being about the same or a little cheaper than regular, and that was more than 10 years ago. What diesel vehicles are you talking about? It was just like today. Mercedes, Big trucks and VW were your only options.

With diesel prices the way they are, I don't see an advantage to them. You're paying a 10% premium over regular. I think it will be like the F-150. The direct injected gas engine will be substituted for the diesel
