PS I'm somewhat disappointed in ATOT today.

I mention wife and sex in the same sentence, and not one request for "PICS!"

For shame, ATOT. For shame.

Forgive me for that but I couldn't get out of my mind what your wife wants with a dog like that.

At any rate, it's your call but I would take my wife back to the breeder and have her do a week picking up Great Dane shit.

By the time you've gotten used to having him around he'll be old and dying. Danes have too short a lifespan.

While not my favorite dog, I think they're cool and definitely a Great Dane >>>>>> over any small dog. Especially yappy fuckers and Corgi's.

I'm always amazed a dog that size seems to be scared of so much shit lol.

My two Danes are asleep on the floor right now. All worn out from playing with my parents' Dane this weekend. They are the BEST dogs! As with any dog though, know the breed and how it fits with your lifestyle before you get one.

Things to know about Danes:

- Short lifespans. Of the six I've had in my life, only three have reached 8 years old. Our two right now are 9, oldest Danes I know.

- You have to train them well as puppies. Anything they learn young and cute, you have to deal with when they're 130-190 lbs. You do not play-wrestle a Dane puppy, and you sure as heck better teach them not to pull on a leash.

- They are not outdoor dogs. You can't leave a Dane in the yard all day, and definitely not if it's raining or snowing or cold. You're getting a house dog, plan accordingly. Danes are actually relatively low energy, much less runaround than a Lab or other working breed, and they make good apartment dogs. Ours never go outside without someone with them. If we let them out, they do their business and come right back to the door to come inside.

- They are furniture dogs. We've got ours trained not to get on the sofas right now but that only works if you liberally sprinkle the house with dog beds and old sofa cushions. Prior to this I've never had a Dane that would stay off the couch.

- They can have stomach torsion problems, and usually it's a good idea to have this surgically prevented at the same time you get them fixed.

- They can be prone to hip dysplasia.

- They are gentle dogs by nature but you need to socialize them properly. It's hard to hold a 150 lb dog who wants to eat the neighbor's cat, and you are much more likely to be sued if your Dane gets scared and bites a mailman than if your Corgi does.

- They are dumb. Sweethearts but most are dumb as a box of rocks. You can teach any dog cool tricks but it will take much more patience and work with a Dane than with a Lab.

- Feed your puppy right. Especially as they're growing, because they grow so fast, you can introduce some serious health problems by not feeding them correctly. Dane puppies will usually eat more than is good for them, so you have to keep them kinda thin until they get past some of their growth spurts. Talk to a vet. As adults, be sure to pick food with good nutritional value.

[edit] Oh yeah, and drooling is genetic. Some drool so badly you can't feed inside the house, others don't drool at all. Ask to see the parents eat and drink and see what your future holds.

Both our Danes live with a healthy respect for my roommate's 10 lb cat. 😀

Parents' Dane puppy about three years ago.

I've always liked great danes. Once my great pyrenees passes I'll probably get one. I've always preferred large dogs.

*UPDATE*

Not exactly a huge surprise, but she who controls the vagina controls the doggie acquisition decisions.

Saturday evening my wife finds out that the dane she wanted is no longer available and decides that it is probably best to wait for a year before getting a puppy. End of story - so I thought. Sunday morning she's back at it... oh, I really like this one too.

Long story short... the new addition to the Jeeebus household:

Awwwww!!!!! S/he's going to be a jowly one! How old? Looks less than 8 weeks... have you already brought her home? Usually you don't want to take puppies younger than that or they can have some development/behavior problems.

Good for you for getting a Merle. They're not showable colors so they tend to be cheaper and harder to find homes for. Pretty though. 🙂 You WILL get asked for the rest of your life if that's some kind of funny looking dalmation. Here's a preview. Cairo was the third Dane I had growing up.

Born on Nov. 9th. We don't get to take her home until after Christmas. She'll definitely be a handful, or two or three or four.

Dont see how a man will submit to his SO no-sex-threat card. If you're good in bed, this no sex threat will be nullified. Sorry, didnt mean to go off-topic. But yea, as funny as it sounds, I would suggest watching dogs 101 episode (segment) on great danes.

Seems like a great choice for a dog.

Everybody has Labs, and GSD's , and Rotties.

GD's are rare, and very cool.
It really sux about their short lifespan tho.

Our next dog might be an Akita, speaking of big dogs.

Post pics of that guy after he grows up a bit.
