I just got this game today and it's insane how much it crashes! I'll be playing for 30 minutes then boom my computer crashes. The screen just goes blank then it shows the boot up process.

What the hell is wrong with this game? Is there a fix for what it's doing? I downloaded the latest patch and it still does it.

Windows XP
GeForce FX5200
1gb ram
sound blaster live 5.1

Don't say it's OpenGL doing it, I run Half-Life and Quak2 in OpenGL and have never had a problem.

JK2 uses DirectX 8.0 for something; sound I think.

Offhand, from what I have been reading on htese forums about XP, I would say that you have the "Reboot after system failure" option enabled. This does not fix your problem, but that would explain the rebooting problem.

The only other thing I can think of is a heat problem. But that does not seem likely.

That is the best I can give you at this time. I am not familiar with XP.....

It's not a heat problem. I'm running that protein folding program for anandtech. The program makes the CPU run at 100%.
I leave this computer on 24/7 with the CPU running full power at all times and the computer never crashes like this. As for GPU created heat; it's an FX5200. This card runs very cool. It doesn't even need a fan on it like my GeForce2 does; the FX5200 runs cool enough with just a heat sink.

Do you have the latest drivers for your chipset and video card? Any overclocks?

No overclocks. Latest motherboard drivers and latest video drivers. Latest sound drivers as well.

I never had any issues with crashing in JKII, even without any patches applied when I bought when it first shipped(JKIII is holding up the same). I've run the game with three different video cards start to finish(2 nVidia, 1 ATi) and three different sound cards(Ensoniq, Seismic Edge, nForce2, two sound cards and one integrated if you want to get picky) and I play the game regularly through all the various driver revisions. Also ran through it on three different mobos(one Via KT133, one nForce1, one nForce2) and four different processors(GHZ Athlon, 1.4GHZ Tbird, 1.5GHZ AXP, 2.1GHZ AXP) and have not had any of the issues.

I am not stating all of this to try and state that you are doing something wrong in any way, just that I would be looking somewhere besides the game for whatever is causing the reboots. Have you tried SeriousSam on your rig? I ask this as it and JKII push stability harder then Folding@Home by a decent margin(running F@H @100% CPU utilization my core temps are about 4C cooler then running SS without F@H in the background).

I would say to start off trying to rule out driver bugs. Which versions of the drivers are you using? I can say that the last official nVidia drivers run the game perfectly fine for me, which mobo do you have? Have you tried disabling EAX? What about your PowerSupply?
