Eug - I moved to the US about 10 years ago. I'm Canadian. Born in Montreal and grew up in Brossard, a suburb of Montreal. I joined a club called the SCA (
SCA link if you really want to know what it is) and spent a fair bit of time in the US. It used to drive me crazy that Americans didn't know what I thought were simple things (like what's the name of the capital of Canada).
After living here for quite a while, I finally realized that it was insecurity. The US is such an overwhelming country that we tend to look for anything to show up the Americans, to show that we're "superior". That just shows a Canadian failing, not an American failing.
The truth of the matter is that Canada is a great country. I am proud to be Canadian. Proud of our history, our culture, and the contribution that we have made and continue to make to the world.
The fact that we have managed to remain Canadian even with the US so close shows the strength of our country. I will be a US citizen within the next year, but I would not have done so if I had been forced to renounce my Canadian citizenship. I love, honour, and repect Canada and that same love, honour, and respect is growing in me for the USA as well. I have been blessed to have been able to live in two great countries and fortunate that I have lived all over the Us and have spent quite a bit of time in Europe as well.
