Jealousy

I'm putting together some stuff (church stuff) on jealousy, and I'm seeking random thoughts to jumpstart my thinking process. What types of things are you guys jealous of? What form does jealousy take in you (do you sulk, get mad, scheme...)? What effect does it have on you in the long run, in your mood, in how function in the everyday, in how you act around the object of said jealousy? What happens if you manage to attain whatever the cause of your jealousy was, what's the resulting feeling? I can't think of any more articulate questions, but you get the gist. 🙂

well, when i see a 16 year old kid driving around a 30k+ car and here i am in my 98 nissian that usually does it

Hmmm....two biggest triggers for guys (IMHO) are women and toys/money. The lizard brain always wants the most attractive female in the herd and the best/biggest/shiniest toys to convey our high status to others. (tounge planted in cheek, BTW 😉 )

So what's the jealous reaction? "What an idiot" or "damn I wish I could have that"?

i am jealous of my friend's who's parents buy them everything. ive worked for everything i own, and havent had little to no help from others. scenario: moving to a new place with my best friend, his parents bought him a 2003 civic, he has no car payments, doesnt worry about registration, same for insurance, just has to gas it up. and when we move out, his parents will cover half his rent. my reaction to all this is that i always make cracks at his expense and call him spoiled and joke at him a lot. i think in turn it adversly affects him and make him try and become more independent, because he used to be worse off (in high schoo,, he would get food dropped off to him lunch EVERYDAY). as for the last question, i will never attain that goal. im already too old and independent enough, so it would never fly.

Depends. For me it's a comination of "damn I want that" and an assessment of whether the person "deserves" to have the item in question. It's infinitely more irritating if it seems they aren't deserving or haven't earned it somehow.

Example: I'm out last Sunday with friends having wings and beer at a local place. I see a brand new Mercedes G55 AMG pull up. A college-age kid gets out of it. I look closer. Sure enough, there's an Emory U sticker on the damn thing. He's obviously one of the many super-coddled kids attending that school whose parents buy them cars, houses, etc without blinking an eye. I'm completely annoyed by the whole thing for no good reason.

My friend's parents bought him a brand new G35... 🙁 and he's 18. 🙁 I was envious at first... since i'm a car nut and he isn't so he probably doesn't care about it... but i could care less now what he or anyone drives. Id raise an eyebrow if i see someone with a flashy car... but heh... im still working for my own car.

yeah, but i cared, and here is a perfect example: planning a trip to vegas, and trying to decide how to get there, i asked him to drive. i figure, hey, he has a new car, gets great gas mileage, and is dependable. his response? i dont want to put miles on it.

lol id be the same way... 😉 actually what bugs me is how everything is spoonfed to these people yet he calls me whining about how his parents are asking him to pitch in $100 a month for his car. It came out to $47k after financing 😕 ... for some reason they went with 6 years... but he gets what he wants so his parents probably had no choice.

tsk tsk.... only $100?? sheesh, must be nice! but its cool though. because we know these people who are spoon fed like this, when they enter the real world, and mom and dad cant be there for them, they are going to get eaten alive.

I think there are 2 types of jelousy:

1) You see somebody more successful than you and you want to try and become like him
2) You see somebody more successful than you and you wish for bad things to happen to him so that he becomes just like you.

I'm the first type 🙂

i never get jealous over material goods or money or something like that.. seriously... i only get jealous if someone is better than me at all both major aspects of life for me (school, girls) or if i like a girl and the girl likes him. and yea, i don't get jealous of girls, just guys.
