Pretty much what you'd expect. Toyota and Honda dominate. Domestics improved a lot, particularly GM. Some European brands did not fare well. Koreans are still at the bottom, but remember they have already made significant gains in initial quality since 2001 so dependability should continue to rise as well.

Many models have been redesigned or improved since 2001, but this study gives you a decent idea of what to expect from a given manufacturer, and it's helpful for looking at used cars.

Was it not a JD Power report of initial quality that had GM number #2? So this is just another progressive line for GM as their New cars are as reliable as Toyo and Honda.

Of course VW is still near the bottom. In fact it is the lowest NON-economy car company, who would have thunk it. 😉

Actually, you're right. GM only improved their score by 2 over the 2003 version of this report, so they were already the leader among domestic brands (and very good overall). Ford and DCX have shown more improvement vs last year, but they had more room for it.

ford needs to kick some arse at jaguar and land rover. those brands should be better than lincoln, not to mention ford.

MB is still dragging down DCX, i see.

I'd say that the domestics are doing pretty damn good.
Lookie!

I'm impressed at the showing by GM, Ford and to a lessor extent DC.

Anyone else confused by the "industry average?" Is the the average of all cars sold? Because it certainly isn't an average of that chart.

I have always been a little wary of the great J.D. Power and their studies.

I don't know that the raw number of "problems" with a new vehicle is indicative of ultimate reliability, and the survey says nothing about the respective seriousness of the "problems".

I know if I had to rely on a car's reliability to carry me safely across Death Valley or a similarly hostile environment, I'd choose a Toyota (#8 on their "Nameplate VDS Ranking") over a Buick (#2) every day and twice on Sunday.

Likewise.

My first car was a 1985 Isuzu I-Mart, econobox 4 banger which I purchased for $1800 around 1990. To this day it's still one of my favorite cars, maybe because of the nostalgia and memories. Considering I put nearly 20k on it within 9 months it was VERY RELIABLE. Unfortunately the weekend trips to the coast plus driving a paper route really put it's toll on the car. If I could do it all over again I'd probably buy a 1988 Honda Accord LXi instead but I would not hesitate to buy an Isuzu car again.

Toyota still ownz. HUZZAH! 😛

Where are Camry and Accord? Malibu, Altima, and Grand Am are top picks.

I said Toyota, not Camry and Accord. Are you dense or can you just not read? I think it's just a little of both 😀

I can't believe Porsche, BMW and GM are as high on the list as they are.

This certainly hasn't been my experience.

Glad to see the Prelude's on that list...now hopefully that applies to earlier model years as well, since that's all I can afford. 😛

Uh...I am surprised that so many of you didn't think Porsches were that reliable. I knew it all along.

You guys need to make up your mind. Either this list is a fraud, or it is right.
