GM and Ford = boring car companies trying to play off their past (retro cars etc).

Huh? Ford probably has the most compelling full-lineup of any mainstream automaker on the planet.

Please don't comment on cars again. To anyone. Anywhere.

The new Caddies really boost the average, most likely.

Apparently, you didn't read the article.

GM and Chevy are in the Top 5.

And this:
Krebs said the turnaround in quality for GM (GM, Fortune 500) and its domestic rivals Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) and Chrysler Group started a number of years before GM and Chrysler fell into bankruptcy. But that it's taken a while to change car buyer's opinion. The rankings are based upon surveys of owners of each model cars.

"Perception is finally catching up with reality," she said.

I've been saying this for a long time. Ford and GM have been as good as the Japanese brands for a long while now, and people are finally starting to realize it. I said it years ago, that Honda and Toyota took a long time to overcome their "recycled beer can" image and be perceived as the best cars, even with GM and Ford crapping the bed in the 80's and 90's. And I said that the change in perception didn't happen overnight, and wouldn't change overnight. But now it is.

People without taste are, by definition, not picky. These 'reports' reflect the buyers, not the cars.

Sorry, but an article about quality with a big picture of an Impala at the top is fucking hilarious. Might as well have a VW Beetle up there with the caption 'MOST LUXURIOUS CAR IN THE WORLD DECLARED.'

The Impala might be boring, but it isn't a bad car. Given how my boss drives his cars and how many miles his Impala has, well...

Yes, I know that is only one car out of X produced, but if anyone will find a weak spot in a car he will :p

Don't try to play off your opinion as if it can be fact. Fords vehicles may not actually be boring, but they sure as hell look like garbage. I test drove a Flex and an Explorer last week and left without a 2nd thought. Apart from their dash and electronic system I didn't like them, and when you factor in price I had no problem leaving them behind.

Wow, you didn't like them. But other people do. And you conveniently left out the Focus, Fusion, Fiesta, Mustang, Escape. All piling on good to great reviews.

I understand, but the audacity of his comment saying just because somebody doesn't like Ford means he shouldn't comment on cars period is disgusting. The rampant fanaticism in the auto community is so damned annoying and I'm sick of it.

F%^, you are one pretentious mechanic.

My mechanic says the same things actually. He was the one pushing me to get rid of my Maxima before it started costing me serious money. It already was going to need a steering rack and had all 3 motor mounts replaced. This guy is a friend and he would have stood to profit if I had kept it... hell, he did most of the work on it including the motor mounts. I will be taking my Camry Hybrid to him once the 2 year free maintenance period is up. You want to hear a guy curse up a car ask him about the utter garbage that is the PT Cruiser. :D

That said, our Lexus hasn't been bullet proof. Lexus has replaced the camshafts and the pistons (all under warranty of course and gave us a free loaner car for the duration of the time needed to complete the repairs). I think they had some issues with the early IS250's though and our warranty repairs bear that out. Other than that the car has been excellent in 109k miles. It has never left us stranded and Lexus has never failed to meet or exceed our expectations for quality service. I fully expect we will replace my wife's Lexus with a newer GS350 in the next year or so if the economy improves.

I looked at Ford but admittedly I did not drive the new Fusion Hybrid before I bought my car. Primarily because my last visit to a Ford dealership left me so dissatisfied with their sales staff that I honestly didn't want to ever step foot in another Ford dealer as long as I live and I didn't buy car from them.

You want to sell me a car? Don't pressure me.

That's the key, right there. It's hard for me to hand my money over to most of the Ford dealers in southern California. Sleazy guys in cheap, shiny suits. I've accepted the fact that if I want a Ford, I'll buy it used. Toyota and Lexus make it too easy. I've been to other domestic dealers around the country and they fair a little better. My parents bought an Accord when the Ford dealer just pissed them off.

This is sad:

I hear the Cal Worthington song.

And the '405 freeway, firestone exit, southgate' car dealership song.

Oh ya, and his dog, spot.

The "quality" aspect of the JD Power ranking is misleading for me because I always think "stuff that breaks which needs fixing." However, it also dings based on "stuff that people don't like."

2013 U.S. Initial Quality Study Results
A key finding of this year's study is that nearly two-thirds of the problems experienced in the first 90 days of ownership are related to the vehicle's design, as opposed to components that malfunction. For example, the component may be working as designed, but owners deem it a problem because it may be difficult to understand or operate.

That's pretty much all I'm saying.

Okay, and being a dick about GM's, too, but it's a silly study, and I'd mock any result. Still, I don't think I'm that far off the mark. Toyota and Honda probably would probably have similarly few complaints for the same reasons (non-picky, 'I want transportation' buyers).

It surprises me that Porsche and Lexus would come up so high, though. I can think of some reasons for Porsche (...does anyone want to go to a Porsche dealer for any reason ever?), but I'd expect lots of whining from Lexus owners.

The models named in that latter link are baffling, though. Ancient full-frame GM trucks...the Murano and FX, which I'd rank as two of Nissan's worst...the aforementioned Impala (I'm sorry, but even if it's reliable, that car is miserable and does nothing right).

I didn't have an issue with our local Ford dealer. They may have been in cheap suits but they were straightforward. However based on my experience at Galpin Honda and others who have gone to Galpin Ford I will never step foot in a Galpin dealership again.

Honda salesman are typically the worst: "We have the best products and we know you'll buy them anyway". Plus they love bashing the competition. My best dealership experiences have been from GMC and Subaru. Toyota was OK, but not great.

Oh man, almost all car dealerships I've ever been to have been horrendous. Even ones I wouldn't think would screw people over of course will screw people over at any possible opportunity.

My most hated example was in summer 2008, just before me and the lady got together :

She went to Carmax, and ended up buying under pressure from sleazy salesman this :

2006 Kia Rio Sedan 5-Speed, 31k miles, $11988, on a high interest SIX year loan. Utterly insane, turns out she had a 770 credit score and even with $2k down she was paying $250/mo.

The worst thing about it? Down the street at Central Kia, 2008 Kia Rios were stickered at $10999 and collecting dust. She could have driven out of there at like 1.9% on 48 months with zero down and still had lower payments. With a brand new car instead of 2 years + crapton of miles.

Bad taste aside in buying a horrendous Kia (they make much better models now, but those Rios are absolute garbage), they just totally ripped her off because they saw someone who didn't know much about cars and had never bought a car from a dealer before.

Exactly - And more people complain about stuff they don't like.

I've always had great experiences with Carmax - low pressure sales and willing to spend as much time with you as you need - commissions were the same regardless of what vehicle they put you in. .

Me too. My sales lady at Carmax didn't care if I bought a Shelby GT500 or a Focus sedan. She was awesome.
