Jaz drive, no longer available?

Got a fast question, are Jaz-drives no longer sold? I have searched the net and
only found Jaz-media, no drives and no information.

Why would you want a Jaz anyway?
Who not just get a CD-RW or DVD-RW/+RW/RAM(whatever is today's standard).

I?m preparing a system for someone who says he wants
to use a Jaz drive, and thus I need to add a SCSI interface.
And since I never touched SCSI before I just wanted to
check up on some specs to get it right.

Welcome to Anandtech.

The JAZ media just never reached a price point where they became affordable. Thus they never were widely used. In their hayday, a 1 GB JAZ disk cost around $100. At the same time a 4 GB hard drive was selling for about $100. If you just needed a backup, the hard drive was a whole lot faster and cheaper. If you needed something more portable, external hard drives would do the trick. Thus the media cost killed any chance a JAZ drive had of succeeding. I think now the price is down to $40 for 1 GB storage which is still exceedingly high. A 0.7 GB CD costs about 25 cents. But if you still are interested, there are a couple of places I found quickly. Go to pricewatch.com and do a search for "JAZ drive". It will give you a page with many JAZ disks and a couple of places selling JAZ drives.

Too much if you ask me for such dated equipment.


As for SCSI, just make sure you set the Devices ID (usually on the back of the drive) to something other than 7 as that is the address on the channel for the SCSI adpater.

Then it is just basically plug and play.
Install the adapter, and once you do, the system will let you find the drive, or do it itself.

P.S. I also recommend a newer medium such as DVD-RW/+RW/RAM

Althought I agree that the customer is "always right" there can still be value in suggesting alternatives or inquiring into the customers interest in a particular product. If he/she says "Well I read a review a while back that said JAZ drives were all the sh!t and I want one." You could definately explain to him that they were back in 1998 (maybe slightly more recently) but that they never gained industry wide acceptance due to pricing and compatability. Alternatively you could suggest.

1) A removable HD.
2) CDR &/or CDRW.
3) A desktop PCMCIA interface so you can use a 1 gig micro drive.
4) Any of the more recent 'memory stick' type media's and a reader.
5) A USB pen/keychain drive, like this one
6) This sweet product: WiebeTECH 1GB FireWire Keychain .
7) Both 4 & 5 above, like this .

Try to talk them out of the Jazz!!! I used them in the past-and have lost data when they die, and they do die. They were big, fast and portable--in 1998. Even if they already have data on Jazz disks--move it to CDs or DVDs. Jazz = junk. R

I believe he already uses jaz-drives with some older systems that are still running. And I guess he wants to use the same backup system on all machines as long as it?s possible.
Well, I?ll see if I can change his mind.
