Shhh. Don't mention that albatross of a contract handed to Ryan Howard. I supported it, too.

I defended the shit out of that contract. For the sake of my own dignity, please don't search my posts for it.

I won't bother, but come on son... that was a mistake through and through. I defended the Lee trade, but Howard's contract is indefensible.

Oh, I agree now. Especially seeing what Adam Dunn got. I'm quite the homer, though, and as a fan I really wanted to see Howard stick around. But between that and the Ibanez deals, we couldn't keep Werth (not that anyone sane would pay him 18 mil for 7 yrs) and we can't take another run at Lee.

As of right now, Matt Diaz is looking like the best we can afford. Matt Diaz.

This team needs to go out and get Scott Downs or Brian Fuentes. Or both. Otherwise Contreras and Madson aren't going to make it to the All Star Break.

Lol, I, too, could "see" it with a ton of rationalization, but, honestly . . . :'(

Back to the now Werthless Phillies: Our esteemed Senor Waste has it right -- there is little to nothing for Philly fans to resent about his tenure as a Phil, and no one above 80 IQ can begrudge him accepting the near-ridiculous years and per/year buckaroos in the contract he got from Nots.

From the Washington perspective I believe this will end badly for them. Werth is moody, imho, and I suspect the depth of his character. If the Nots keep losing, he will lose interest and under-perform, mark my words.

I am more surprised it was the nats doing this....I would have expected this more from a Boston/Yankees bidding war.

Lets hope Domonic Brown is GTG and maybe Amaro does some bargain hunting.

But I say fix the bullpen first.

I believe "diva" is the correct term. I loved the designer white sunglasses he wore..

It cracks me up when a team like the Nationals start spending like their the Yankees and end up just tossing money out the window. $18M/year for Werth? Really he's not worth that much ;)

Well you probably haven't seen what the Nats charge for infield tix... a good amount more than Baltimore which is pretty hilarious. All in all, I think the Nats' owner is upping his game and trying to be competitive which is great for baseball and the NL East. I think Werth is a solid upgrade over Dunn even though they had to pay 4mil and 3 years more. It would have been nice if the Nats could have kept Dunn and signed Werth too but you have to expect some teams to snipe superstars with the dilution of the expansion.

Nothing wrong with upping the game, but that's a pretty crazy contract even in Yankee terms. Although if Bryce turns out to be the real deal with Zimmerman in the mix the Nats could rise pretty fast.

Which is strange, because Nats attendance is pretty bad, isn't it? I don't even go when the Phillies are in town, thats how uninterested I am in paying their prices.
