7 years, 126 mil. 18M a year, but he will be 38 when that contract runs out.

It's seriously f*cked up.
I guess in a couple of three years the Yankees will have to take that contract off the Nats hands.

The Phils definitely could have kept him. 16 mil for the same number of years, and I bet he signs.

Then again, look at the Ibanez deal. And that's for far less money.

Reminds me of the Tigers signing Pudge in...2003? Teams like that have to overpay for free agents. This one strikes me as a particularly bad choice, though. A corner outfielder that has never hit .300 and never had 100 RBI? Wow.

Talk I heard was something like 5/$80M and I thought even that was overpaying.

I'd take less money to not play for the Natonals.

Does that mean we get the Nats' pick in this year's draft, or next year?

If so, does that mean the Phils are picking #1 overall this year?

It will be the next draft (June '11) and the first 15 picks are protected. I'm not sure if the Phils just get the sandwhich pick and a 2nd round pick now or what.

edit: Yes, that's correct. Philly will get the sandwhich round pick and the Nationals' 2nd round pick.

First fifteen picks are restricted. Pretty sure the Phils only get a second rounder because the Nats signed him.

Werth has zero protection in that lineup. Zimmerman? Harper (whenever he's called up)? Hope you enjoyed your few seasons of success because you'll never reach that again.

Meh, Wirth is basically Dunn with slightly less power, better defense, and better baserunning skills. The Nationals will see little difference between Dunn and Wirth at the end of the day. Wirth is projected to be worth somewhere between $110 - $120 million over the length of his contract, so, assuming the projections are close, the Nationals paid ~$8 million over what he'll be worth during his contract.

The bigger question than the actual terms of the contract are whether the Nationals should be investing this much money in a premier FA right now. It is unclear how competitive they will be, but it is unlikely they'll be making the playoffs in the next few seasons.

Confirms my feelings that Werth is a meathead. After 'X' number of millions, how many millions more do you want or need? As a ballplayer, don't you want to play for a contender?

Werth is an idiot.

Watch, before next season is done you will see him dogging it if not flat out laying down on the job.

He's going to enjoy having zero protection in that lineup, lolol.

Yeah well at least he's getting paid big bucks for being an idiot, on the other hand we're doing it for free D:

Well he'll be protecting Zimmerman or the other way around, either way I can't believe the Phils let him go to the Nats!! Ugh, now we need a right-handed power hitter but no matter who it is he won't be able to replace all the things that man did to help the team, loved his energy too, so many times it seemed like him and Victorino would be the only ones who showed emotion.

Werth's numbers will be way down next year. Philly hit Victorino, Ibanez, Chooch 6-7-8 last year. That's protection. He had to hit 5th in this lineup. Who protects him in Washington?

Werth's return to Philadelphia is a dollar dog night. Just ask J.D. Drew about what could happen...

I doubt Philly hates Werth though. I've been hearing from friends in the area, and they're just astonished that Washington signed him. I don't get the sense that there are any hard feelings. It's not like Philly would be dumb enough to pay him that money, and even Philly fans realize it's not reasonable to take a $10M per year hometown discount.

Alcohol and passion produce poor decisions. Most of my friends are shocked, and I'm unsure what his reception is going to be when he returns.

Oh I know. I grew up just outside of Philly during the JD Drew "era" :) I grew up just outside of Philly because my parents decided we needed to move out from the epicenter of said alcohol, passion, and bad decisions.

I think Werth will get some applause. He did good work for this team, didn't ever say a word about his contract situation, and helped win a championship. As far as guys who leave Philly go, his departure is far less acrimonious than McNabb, and even McNabb was received warmly.

True. I also think most fans realize Werth's numbers were greatly supported by the lineup he was in. (Everyone overlooked that loopy swing.) So, maybe he'll get a some cheers, but after the first visit it's all business.

That swing drove me nuts. Just like Burrell, with "the swing." Man they both drove me nuts.

Werth is replaceable. If anything, we'll miss the fact that he's a right handed bat and a really, really good outfielder. His production wasn't anything too special, at least not when it counted.

Production when it counts? Hah! The entire team had problems with that. He was a good right handed bat, but a lot of it was his environment.
