eminem, he bested jay-z on his own track. listen to renegade off the blueprint album...

EDIT: For the record I enjoy Jay-Zs songs more, but recently he hasn't done anything memorable. Dear summer wasn't spectacular or anything and his verse on Kanye's Diamonds are forever remix had nothing to do with Kanye's verse or the song at all. Still, Reasonable Doubt is better than any Eminem album. Eminem is better lyricist though.

Jay-Z without a doubt. Eminem had a few good songs but for the most part its all just talking about halley and his x now. Jay-Z is amazing. But hes not on the list but I'd choose Common over both of them any day.

Both of them are commercial fakes whose average listener gets a ride to school in their mother's minivan.

I give the vote to Jay-Z for consistency. Eminem has incredible talent, but it just seems like he's giving into commercialism way too much lately. Without Infinite and Slim Shady LP, he only has a handful of hits. Why does he have to try to sing all of his hooks now? They sound terrible and annoying. I don't even want to listen to any of the new material he's coming out with. He should have retired after Eminem Show, because ever since, he's been on a freefall. At least Jay-Z called it quits on a high note. My favorite Jay-Z track is Friend or Foe.

Sure its an opinion who's better, but its also a fact :p

for those that don't know jayz does NOT write his rhymes they are all off the head. Like em sits and thinks about words and phrases and stuff and writes them down.

By that criteria, does that mean that Dustion Hoffman's "Rainman" is better than both?

It depends, are you talking about public appeal or natural talent? Huge difference.

Jay-Z gets the nod on style, he can switch up the moods/tone on his style at the drop of a dime (from joking to serious) way more than Em ever did and all the while holding his listeners' attention. But Em gets the nod for lyrics though, he's on another level than Jigga, the way he twists syllables within a bar revolutionized today's rap game. Battle rapping, Em would destroy Jay-Z if it was off the top of the dome.

So to summarize, raw talent alone, Em wins. For mass appeal, Jay-Z.

Troll? Yeah, you're so right  Besides, I think there are plenty of other rappers better than Eminem or Jay-Z--out of the two, Eminem is better.

see that wasn't so hard was it :)

so my question to you what aspect of rap are you using to base your decision? production, lyrics, # of hits, accolades, flow, freestyle ?

you forgot the most important aspect. who you like more.. who the fvck cares about production, lyrics, # of hits, accolades, flow, freestyle if you like one over the other?

then again you can enjoy both :D

Jay-Z by far. I think Eminem has some good rhymes but Jay-Z always is lyrically superior. I think his flow is better. And maybe above all else, Eminem jokes around too much.. Even when Jay-Z makes a "fun" song it's not silly. It's fun and had a good beat. Eminem takes it too far. I like both of course, but Jay-Z more.

based on what?

Em hasn't put out anything that touches reasonable doubt. And whats yoru favorite Em track/Album

That is your opinion. I disagree.

I dont' think Jay Z has any tracks from any albums that is as well versed as The way I am or Lose Yourself.

I love Jay Z, but Eminem is on another level IMO.

Oh, and for what its worth, I think Nas is better than them both.

I know I was trying to get him to talk about his opinion like you have. Not convince him he's wrong. And I'm pretty much in agreement with you on Nas.

I think you also need to keep in mind the two things that seperate em and jay z . Em sits down with note books and note books of rhymes and a thesaurus while jay z is more of a natural spitting everything off the head only. That in itself puts him on a higher level to me as I feel I could sit down and write out a ton of rhymes too for a few years straight and I'd probably be pretty incredible too. Jay-z never had to do that...which is why to me he may not be using the entire dictionary but his words still seem much more poetic than Em. Em is def still top 5 without a doubt.
Where are you getting this from? Jigga writes his lyrics just like any other rapper does, anyone that tells you otherwise is straight up lying. And if Jay-Z says he doesn't, he's lying. There is no rapper who freestyles off the top of the dome for a cameo they're getting 10-20K to do, would you invest in someone who does that? lol, hell no, I want to see what their verse will be before writing that check. For example, if you honestly think he did 22 TWO's off the top of his dome then you're living in a dream world, nobody could have freestyled something that sophisticated and organized off the top of the dome.

I agree.

Also Im aware Jay-Z does most of his stuff off his head, but I think thats irrelevant since Eminem is also capable of freestyling. Furthermore, in the end lyrical content is what matters. Biggie never freestyled, he wrote all his rhymes as well but hes considered by some to be one of the greatest rappers. Tupac also wrote his lyrics, but in my opinion Tupac > Jay-Z. Still, though I like Jay-Z more than Eminem I think Eminem is more talented than Jay-Z.

hes been known to just step into a studio and drop verses without writing anything down while the other artists continue to edit their rhymes on paper.

Refer to my previous post. People need to get out there and actually hear what HIP HOP is. There is good hip hop out there, they simply don't play it on the radio.

So am I trolling? Its open for debate since I am a Rap fan, I just like to see all of the sheep around here who know nothing about actual Hip Hop music and all of the different sub-genres contained there in. Only what they hear on the radio, which is only a fraction of what you call "rap".

So what do you listen too? I don't have too much non-mainstream rap. Would you say Tech Nine isn't mainstream. I am just looking for some good underground stuff to listen to. I mainly listen to rock, but I am in the mood for some new "other" rap to listen to.

fake edit: I voted for Eminem because I don't like way the Jay-Z is produced or some of his beats. I do like both rappers older albums better than their newer ones.

real edit: punctuation

Many times it's hard to say whether Jay-Z didn't previously write them and "recycle" them. He has such good control over his flow/mood that he can make it seem like he's not reciting them from memory, but I'd still be kind of skeptical. He probably knew he was going to be on the broadcast in advance, whipped up a new verse before going out to the studio, practice/memorize it a couple times, and spit it when you get there. Not that this is a bad thing at all, but it's not really off the top of the dome... Most of the time a good freestyle will have some really simple stuff with 2 bars rhyming (I spit and lyrics hit you like a brick) intertwined with some really clever punch lines. It's not too hard to tell whether something was prewritten or not.

Another reason why I bring up the Jigga recycling of lyrics is because he has had a history of doing it. He has bit 10-29 of Biggie's lyrics, and it was speculated by many that a) either Biggie was ghostwriting for Jigga or b) they both had the same ghostwriter. When peeps asked Jigga about it a year back, he said all of the times he would reference a Biggie quote was just his way of paying homage to Biggie. Yet, some of his lyrics mirrored Biggie's while they were both still alive! So something was fishy I think. And it wasn't even Biggie songs that Jigga has bit too. Coincidence or is Jay-Z really a biter?

I can't decide...I love them both.

Oh yeah, I went to a strip club this summer and one of the songs a stripper danced to was Eminem's "Evil Deeds". It was awesome.

Whether or not he had the songs prepared in his head is yet to be determined and may never be. Fact is he does not write down verses, songs or lyrics. He creates, edits, and recites from memory. Try editing the last email your wrote without writing it first. Not as easy as you'd like to think.
