We have one of those (it's broken at the moment), it's like an ink jet but with plastic and a third dimension. Pretty neat tool.

wow, that entire system is simply amazing. I've known that those plastic 3d printers existed, but when Leno showed that the wrench actually had moving parts, I went :Q

I didnt watch the entire thing but yea the fact that it is capable of making things with moving parts is amazing. I have seen stuff like this starting to emerge in medicine and science to make 3D renders of things like bones, nerves, veins, vessels, etc. Oh and Jay Leno is awesome.

I?ve read about these 3D printers before. The concept that?s really exciting is the ability to incorporate metal in to the printing process. People talk about using these machines in your own household to print (build, whatever) for example a mobile phone, and all you do is pay for/download the blueprints from the manufacturer.

The 3d printer isn't that "new"... MSOE has had one on campus for nearly 20yrs now:

no they have been around for a while i believe they started with cutting out Styrofoam blocks into models. To have one make a plastic copy with working parts is pretty damn cool.
