Java runtime for athlon 64

I can't get the proper java runtime to install on my new machine. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Athlon 64 3200+
ASUS A8N-E
ASUS X800XL
1024 dual channel
win xp pro sp2

any help would be greatly appreciated!
