Java issues

Seemingly randomly, all Java applets have stopped working for me. They'll open, but all I get is a blank, gray screen. This includes things within internet browsers as well as individual programs like Limewire. I've reinstalled Java, and cleared my computer as much as possible of adware and spyware, but no success. Anyone have any ideas?
