JASON CLARK: New avatars?

Not suggesting self-applied custom ones(uploading, linked form another sight, etc).... but how about some decent avatars? I think if we got some avatars that related to computing in some way, they'd be a hit. Dunno if you can add more or if you have to lose some to gain some.... but an idea lingers:

we submit avatars, custom made & not from another source, to the mods or Jason to review. If they like it can feel those avatars can be used by everyone and not just for the person who created it (i.e. someone who made an avatar with their face on it...), then Jason can put them up with the default avatars.

How about a fire, a random explosion, the space shuttle, and a rocket?

I know there are alot, and i appreciate the variety... but an "ape" or an "asian chick 1" can only go so far.
How about non-default avatars that are made by the AT crew? We gotta be unique

whoever makes an avatar the mods feel can be used in the "new avatars"? I'm sure the mods don't want to be in photoshop creating 20+ avatars. I think a design/submit venture may be appropriate.

OK, pm sent. I actually think this is a great idea. Because the mods/jason review each avatar before they list it for the whole site to use, we won't have to worry about "just uploaded my avatar tonight cause i made it using Paint!" pics

I think it would be great to have some really cool selections or more of a selection of avatars. Or even if one had the ability to link to some URL pics somewhere and pick your own custom avatar within reason of course.

I actually have an avatar on another webboard that I link to and it is a really cool pick of a fantasy Valkyrie (norse mythology) Warrior Maiden with a Shield and Sword.

No, no. I'm not saying we can each have our own custom. that would defeat the purpose of letting the mods choose. I'm saying we replace most (if not all) of the current, default avatars and have people submit their "prospect avatars" to replace the old ones. No linking or uploading as the mods wouldn't be able to enforce what avatars are present at a given day. This way, with all the approved avatars where the default ones are now, we have brand new selection that actually relates to AT or OCing or video cards or something computer-based, but are approved by the mods

How to you indicate that an explosion is indeed random, and not pre-planned, in a simple graphic?

I made a custom avatar for brigden, here.

It's based on this, which comes from this and I added the flesh tone from my avatar.

But one small can of worms: how are the mods (Jason) going to know beyond a reasonable doubt that the avatars being sent to them for their approval aren't stolen from somewhere else? Copyright violations could become an issue.

edit: I don't think this should cause the issue to halt completely, but rather that it is approached carefully to ensure that this does not become the case. Besides, I'm tired of this apple. How about a Granny Smith apple? Or, maybe a Fuji.

Macintosh apple would be interesting.

Existed long before Apple computers; therefore using the description would not be in any type of copyright violation.

Just go down to a local orchard, snap a picture and turn it into an avatar.

there are loads and loads to choose from now, but there are so many that are close to each other and many that are never used. numerous asain chicks and office ppl ... not needed imho.

a fresh set... based on what reallly reflects the member population would be wonderful.

it could have a label telling all who look upon it that it is indeed a depiction of an explosion that happened completely randomly.
