coolest fiction spy.

anyone?

both have been big box office hits, harrison ford is jack ryan, matt damon is ok as bourne.

edit

ya, you guys are correct, ryan isn't a good juxtaposition for bourne, john clarke would probably have been better.

well jack obviously didn't have the physical prowess of jason, but in my opinion, jack's stories are more intriguing. Don't get me wrong, the bourne trilogy was great, but we're talking Tom Clancy here....

Jason Bourne is a trained assassin, Jack Ryan is an educated Deputy Director of the CIA. I would much rather be a trained assassin.

The only thing I know about Ryan is from the movies. He doesnt come off as a badass in those movies. More of a statesman or diplomat. Bourne flat out kicks your ass and looks for your friends on a different continent.

Bourne imo.

I voted before reading that it's not about who would win in a fight.

Unless it were on a boat, Jason Bourne all the way.

i just read Bourne Betrayal, a Lustbader write of Bourne, it was ok. i'll probably read more if he keeps writing them.

but ya, clancy is pretty good too. but i don't think clancy is as good with the characters as ludlum was, clancy is more the whole epic saga with technology type guy.

Two very different characters, Jack Ryan isn't the muscle that Bourne is, but if we try and say he has the brains it really doesn't do much good when we consider Jason Bourne isn't exactly an idiot - he is also very smart. I voted Bourne just because he kicks so much ass.

Ryan was always kind of a "right place right time" guy with principles. He didn't actively seek items, but more or less got caught by them. Average Joe needs to do the right thing and does so.

Bourne goes out seeking the right thing and does it himself.

But you are right, Kelly would kick both of their arses!

//edit

DAMNIT, the following passage is for Kelly/Clark, not Ryan.
//

Ryan was an ex military man. His wife was killed in an automobile accident. After said accident, he hooked up with a prostitute type woman, who was later killed by her pimps. Ryan went apeshit, killed all the mother fuckers, and then escaped from police by faking his own death. He was recovered by ex military friends, and given a new identity, to which you see in the movies.

If you read the books, Ryan is a far more realistic character and is well rounded in EVERYTHING. That said, Jason Bourne would kick his ass until next Sunday. I'd pick Ryan in a team situation, Bourne by himself.

You're not getting your Clancy right :)

Ryan was the guy who ultimately became president. Kelly/Clark is who you're thinking of.

Ah damnit you replied too fast! I just had to Wiki that myself!

Yeah Kelly/Clark would be a way better representative than Jack Ryan. Sorry, it's been a few years since I've even touched my Clancy books. God he was so good back in the day.

Clancy is IMO a better author than Ludlum, although Clancy's later books (post-Sum of All Fears) did fall off QUITE a bit in quality. I started wondering if Clancy was searching for a cure for insomnia with his books.

OTOH, the Bourne movies bear little resemblence to the books (and are that rare example of the movies being way better than the books), while all of the Clancy books were better than their movies. I'd say a lot of that is because Matt Damon is perfect for playing Bourne, whereas they never found the right actor to play Ryan (except maybe Baldwin in Red October, but Ford was too old and let's not even talk about Affleck). Willem Defoe was a very good as John Clark though.

Anyway, that's my ramblings on the subject.

I agree that the later books got ugly, but I'd say the quality lasted through Debt of Honor.

I agree completely. I was never a huge Ludlum fan, but I read every word Clancy ever wrote.

I did not like Bladwin as Ryan. They never got the right guy.
