MISIA was known to be pretty good and still is... "everything" was apparently a good hit.
Yoko Kanno comes up with good stuff (if you ever watched Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex).
I tend to listen to Fleet, who made the song "Brand New Reason." Very different from other pop music. I also tend to listen to SUPERCAR, a band that was popular a couple years ago but died down. A good song is from their 2000 album Futurama, "PLAYSTAR VISTA." Another one would be in HIGHVISION, "STORYWRITER." (don't ask why they use caps for those songs..)
Ayumi Hamasaki is going strong,
the pillows are still alive for now...
FLOW is ok,
GReeeeN is very popular for the song "Ai Uta" (????)... ***J-Pop
ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION got on oricon again, "After Dark" was a hit along with "Koro garu iwa, Kimi ni Asa Ga Furu" (?????????????).
If you want some techno, Kotoko is pretty good (sometimes gets on Oricon), and Kawada Mami did come out with a new album that is techno which is also good and did get on oricon.

What do you classify as alternative rock/emo?... Listened to RADWIMPS or something?

Hmm, that's pretty interesting, but actually I'm looking for some music that has singing as well. I'm specifically interested in hearing the Japanese language sung. Thanks for the tip though, these guys sound decent.

so you're looking for the japanese language sung, but not by women... ok...
i love male enka as much as the next old lady, but i'd cry if that was all i could listen to.

It's not that I don't like the female voice, it's just that most of the music sung by women in Japan is the very music I'm trying to avoid.

Edit: Oh, and I thought I invoked a magical charm or something to avoid this situation right here.

Double hate on you because you are hatin' on Ayumi Hamasaki.

Thread sucks already, buddy. Get a life or join Anime Club at your high school or college or community. And that last part was no joke.

listening to ayu is like having a banshee scream in your ear. no thx.

I don't get it, I'm trying to avoid the dregs of Japanese culture, so why would I join an anime club? Plus I think most people that hate me (if any do) don't hate me because I don't want to listen to J-Pop. Post - sense = yours.

I would agree with this.

The JPop I've heard is meh.

Plus my time would be better invested in learning chinese; they are the future once we are weakened; Japan's market is dead.

Wait, so is Mozart actually the name of a Japanese band? Or was JulesMaximus just talking about the Mozart?

X Japan sounds alright, although they are basically like 80s ballads minus horrible synthesizer tracks. I don't immediately go for the back button. The constant insertion of poorly pronounced English lyrics into the Japanese seems unnecessary too...

Alot of Asian bands/singers are bilingual and frequently mix languages in songs.

I like Hajime Chitose. She treats her voice very uniquely, almost like the early classical Japanese music.

Check out Tsuki wo Nusumu by Hajime Chitose. Definitely hits home and has a very emotional You can listen to the first 30 seconds here or sign up at that place for free and listen to the whole song (I do that so then I can stream hard-to-find songs).

never been a fan of namie's music style or image. especially her hiphop stuff.
BoA is meh, i like a few songs of hers though.
I strongly strongly dislike koda and her whoreslut / ero kakkoi deal, she's probably the closest thing to a japanese britney spears.

Whatever they are doing with the chorus I really like. Is it traditional or what?

That's Kenji Kawai - Making of a Cyborg.
That's 1995...
I can't tell you if its traditional though...

From Wikipedia:
"The OST for Ghost in the Shell used Japanese choir singing parts of the Shinto prayer too ami emi tame and taiko drums. Other tracks are mostly instrumental, peaceful, with the dominance of drums. The CD also included pop song "See You Everyday", sang in Cantonese by Fang Ka Wing."

If you want more tracks like that, Ghost in the Shell: Innocence OST has more of the japanese choir doing that.

I think we watch the same anime lol.

BTW, if you like Fleet, there is an American band that has similar sound, The Postal Service. You might like them.

Yeah I've heard The Postal Service (they were used on the UPS commercial lol)... They sound much more upbeat than I'm used to hearing. Not really fond of them yet, but I might later on...

I wonder what animes you've been watching... lol :) SUPERCAR I got them fron watching "Ping Pong," and "Eureka 7 (actually haven't seen yet)."

AKFG = Bleach ftw...
Yoko Kanno = yeah... GITS..
Kotoko and Kawada Mami = everywhere...

do a search for anime soundtracks and you will come up with alot(Dragon Ball Z, FF or something mebee)

video was weird though

Not all anime soundtracks have music like this. I'm specifically referring to the choral style. I have watched plenty of anime, there's a wide variety of music represented.

Fleet comes from Innocent Venus
AKFG = Bleach
Kotoko and Kawada = Shakugan no Shana (recently) although in many other anime
Yoko Kano is in lots as well (GITS, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, come to mind).

I also really like Yuki Kajiura's work (Noir, Madlax, Hacksign, My-hime/otome, Xenosaga game, Gundam Seed) The mix of techno-opera is pretty catchy (for me).
