I don't want to hear J-Pop or lame American Alternarock/EMO copycat stuff (in other words I don't want to hear flavor-of-the-month bullshit). I want some good music that has a staying power beyond the current hits season.

Wow I'm surprised there aren't more non-anime related suggestions! I spent some time in Japan to study and found a few groups I really like. No specific genre, its a bit over but all good music.

Misia
Mr. Children
Yuzu
Southern All Stars(older music though)
Dreams Come True

DCT and SAS are my favorite. SAS has so much stuff over the past million years to sort through, just get the best albums. My favorite DCT albums are Sing or Die, The Monster and Monkey Girl Odyssey.

It's pretty easy to rhyme in Japanese, it just isn't important.

If you want some techno, Kotoko is pretty good (sometimes gets on Oricon), and Kawada Mami did come out with a new album that is techno which is also good and did get on oricon.
More like trance, but yeah. I would say most stuff put out by I've Sound is great, though I am not too fond of MELL. Mostly a KOTOKO fan here, I thought the KOTOKO + Sato Hiromi unit was fantastic. As of late, I been developing a taste for Utatsuki Kaori (Chasse and Open comes to mind).

If you get anything after MiLight, you will find some great Japanese hip-hop.

He is the man, I saw him a few months ago and it was great. He did a collaboration with a Japanese Jazz musician by the name of Toshinori Kondo. I also suggest some of this for some down-tempo chill out jazz.

After Dark was a crappy song.

AKFG is a decent band. But they have LOTS of mediocre songs. Rewrite was in my opinion, their best song, but whatever. I really don't think they are worth listening too anymore

Ayumi Hamasaki is like a cheese grater to the brain.
Koda Kumi = Whore.
FLOW is pretty damn good.
Supercar is also decent
The Pillows are a good band, though they have been moving a bit too much toward mainstream rock.
I actually like L'arc en Ciel. They limit their Engrish, and their songs are good. Of course, they ARE J-Pop so stay clear.
YUI is good in that she has a great voice, but her songs can be pretty depressing.

Yamazaki Masayoshi is good for more Guitar oriented pieces. Kind of like Greenday, but more mellow- Has Engrish, but the rest of the song makes up for it.

Hyde has a pretty damn good voice and a reasonable collection of good songs.

Check out Tsuki wo Nusumu by Hajime Chitose. Definitely hits home and has a very emotional You can listen to the first 30 seconds here or sign up at that place for free and listen to the whole song (I do that so then I can stream hard-to-find songs).

Hajime Chitose is the BEST!
Natsukawa Rimi is also very good. Both are from Okinawa, the sound is soo unique... :)
The girl who sang the theme song to Geddo Senki is also Okinawan, also sounds great... Not sure if she released any other songs...

Damn, this turned J-Pop pretty damn quickly. Actually I guess that happened pretty early on, but it just goes on and on. Seriously, who would need recommendations for this stuff? If I just listened to random Japanese music on YouTube I would happen upon all this crap and a thousand other things that sound exactly like it with no effort.

These are okay, I like that they actually incorporate traditional Chinese style.

Actually I've been listening to some Chinese classical music lately. I always thought Chinese music was really simplistic and tedious, but there's actually a lot of good stuff in the repertoire, and a good deal of it is as sophisticated and grand in scale as Western classical music. I still have this opinion of Japanese music though, as most of the traditional music there seems extremely bland and repetitive. But I'm glad to be corrected in my assumptions by examples of good, native music.
