iirc its not like the Japanese are in love with whale meat. A few years ago they had so much they gave it to schools in order to get kids to try it and hopefully increase demand.

Its more a cultural thing than anything else. And its starting to die out as young people are not as interested in whale meat. Apparently its not particulary tasty and is an acquired taste.
