The most valuable mining to be done on the moon is for Helium 3.

The way this country is headed in its beliefs, etc, it shouldn't be too long.

It's too bad really, as every country already involved in space exploration has something to contribute... It'd be nice to think that they would all get together and put their collective noses to the grindstone...

but NOOOO>.. everyone has to have an international pissing match over who has the bigger shuttle....

Alien: I am a power alien!
Japanese astronaut: Sweet, where are you from?

Aren't we down to like one manned shuttle launch a decade now, with the US slashing NASA's budget every year?

Soon it will be:
Japan
China
EU
USA

Tachikawa's plan follows a January 2004 decision by U.S.
President George W. Bush that the U.S., with the assistance of partners including Japan, should build a lunar base by about 2020 and use it as a staging point for the human exploration of Mars.

whoops. go back to p&n. do not collect $200.

Space exploration should be a joint effort between the willing nations, it's too expensive for one nation to foot the entire bill. As far as the mining, it shouldn't matter a bit. The moons current movement away from the earth has a more dramatic effect than any mining we could do.

Which ones? Seriously, the International space station was supposed to be a joint effort, but according to our "partners" that joint effort was the US paying for the whole thing. Until other nations are willing to step up and pay an equal share of the bill it's not going to happen and getitng money out of Europe for something like that is equvalent to trying to get the US congress to cut fudning to Israel. I'm hopefull Japan will embrace spending some money and we can both benefit from it.
