 to Japan. There is an international moratorium on whaling. NO ONE WHALES, except for true scientific purposes.
I find it disgusting that whaling is the one tradition they are attached to so strongly. Isn't Samurai and tradition? And why aren't they training ninjas? Their Geishas aren't even prostitutes any more!

Didn't read, did you?

They aren't killed for scientific purposes and the whole world knows that.

Why are they killed then? I'll say that 400 was kinda high for "scientific purposes".

To feed to Japanese school children apparently, hence the article.

Its dying out because they killed most of the whales. Is that so hard to understand?

seems like people would have less issues with koreans pushing dog meat in a can than japanese pushing whales.

hmmm

"Before it was common to eat beef in Japan, whale meat was a staple source of protein. Genso Kujiraya in Shibuya maintains that tradition, according to Shukan Taishu, with its whale sukiyaki. When it was first opened in 1959, commercial whaling was still in full force and whale meat was cheaper than chicken. Then, it was packed with students looking to save money, but has since became a high class establishment, though it's still possible to munch on some Moby Dick for as little as 2,300 yen a person."

roughly $23 for what? two slices of sushi? that's expensive.

If we are to tell the Japanese " to save the whales". shouldn't we also tell the American's not to consume so much oil the planet has ? The whales would most likely be here but the oil will soon be gone.

America - stay out of it!! Keep your nose's out of other nation's business. America - who are you to pontificate...??

But back to reality - Where could I get some whale meat for lunch in Tokyo? Any ideas?

There's a pretty big difference with natural resources that you purchase from other countries and eliminating a species from existence.

not all whale populations are endangered. i somehow doubt they are hunting the ones they do not believe are sustainable. course that is probably in dispute. atleast they eat it all.

unlike the other asian delicacies. such as cutting fins off sharks and tossing em over board..bleh. doing weird sh*t to endangered bears and tigers etc.

Minke whale stock is abundant (760,000 whales in the Southern Hemisphere), therefore Japan can take minke whales without depleting their stock. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Styx/9189/whaligcon.html

its not exactly like the japanese are earth unfriendly. they are one of the most energy efficient countries around. their greenhouse emissions are some of the lowest out there per capita for industrialized countries. more so then europe, and certainly america. and under kyoto they are cutting even farther.

seems to be more an issue of food preference.

I thought they were killed for "scientific purposes" (whatever that means) and when they were done with them, they tried to pass them off to schools. Guess I misread it.

yummy whale burger pic

A whale of a burger

A high school girl holds a "whale burger" at a restaurant of Japan's fast food chain Lucky Pierrot in Hakodate, northern Japan. The restaurant chain serves a burger with deep fried minke whale meat and lettuce topped with mayonnaise for 380 yen.
