Sh!t happens. It's not our job to clean up everyone else's mess.
As an American citizen I'm proud of what my country is doing for those people. They don't have the vast resources that we do, so who are we to turn our backs?

I'm proud of it too, I just resent that:

1) People expect it of us
2) We have to publish an increasingly higher number to make people happy

I would much prefer if we supported the effort quietly, without being forced to announce a pricetag.

It's like cutting the price tags off at Christmas, nobody needs to know what we spend.

it's like an ebay auction for the title of "greatest humanitarian nation EVAR". you can "buy it now" for $1B. non-cc paypal only please.

i'm sure an aircraft carrier will do all kinds of good

Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about.

The ships that are being sent to the area are essentially fully self supporting cities. They can temporarily replace infrastructure that was destroyed.

One specific purpose they will be used for is the generation of fresh water (some 90K gallons per day per ship).

Viper GTS

well 9 ships at 90k per ship. worst thing after disaster is polluted water supplies = rampant desease.

drink ur money...

without infrastructure theres no easy way getting things to people with normal 'charity' methods.

I think other superpower asian countries like China, Taiwan and South Korea outta donate money too.

It was probably China who started the tsunami in the first place. National-Synchonized Jump Up Day in China should be banned 😱

BTW, Taiwan has its Red Scare to deal with.

Is you serious? I've always wondered what kind of exacting timing that would require in order for an entire population of a nation of that calibre to jump at the same time. What is the Red Scare?

If they timed it right they could generate a sizable tremor from north to south (natural frequency) and splash some waves at the coast. Just a thought.

KLin, if you cannot find at least some humor during stressful situations, then I feel sorry for you. I don't think people got over 9'11 with stern remorseful faces 24/7. So chin up and be thankful; look towards the future.

competition or not..more money, even for a public relations stunt... is better for the victims. let the competition continue, because i'm not complaining.

and as an economic tragedy its not that bad apparently. to most of those countries its like a fraction of a percent of growth. only sri lanka is fuxored.

The problem isn't money, it's about preventing these things from happening. We're at 2005 now, we shouldn't have tsunamis or other ancient disasters occuring anymore. These countries really need to work on their technological progression.

There is no tsunami warning technology in effect for the Eastern Seaboard of the States as well

I'm just waiting for the news stories of how a good chunk of all the donated money mysteriously disappeared or were given to people no where near the damage areas.

What is this, a competition?!?!

Are you going to donate more than your neighbor??

So what if it is? Who says it's a bad idea? The nature of man sometimes requires competition to bring out the best in him--for the good and interest of the needy and mankind. (Hello Capitalism ... anyone bidding?)

Frankly, I'm amazed to see a small country like Japan afford that much.

That's the first time I've seen anyone call Japan a "small country".

I guess you wouldn't be able name any Japanese companies that sell things like cars and electronics in the US since Japan is such a small country.

🙂

That's great. Very nobel of them. That area is devistated...it'll take years and billions to come close to recovery. They need all they can get.

Geographically, it's small.

It doesn't say all in cash and all now. Aids can be in goods and services and may span a few years. Once the immediate, urgent needs (drinking water and food, temporary shelter, medical supplies) are met, more goods may come from donor countries. It's aid out of kindness, not a trade.

It's become politicized and like a contest, but for the most part, well I do hope, it is still about kindness and generosity.

me: u get away from me! take ur drafts and killing to somewhere lese! u always picks on the poor! u got darft some rich people to ur army!

freind: dude, thats the salvation army.

Yeah, but their economy and population isn't.

Where have you been for the last 40 years?

They have the second-largest economy in the world...
