Japan orders 80 F/A-22 Raptors!!

I saw this on a Taiwanese news channel couple nights ago.
It sounds like Japan has hit some major road blocks in its joint-development of the F2 fighter with the US. Therefore the Japanese government has decided to order 80 Raptors to be delivered in the next 4 years. The US government has not made an official decision yet, however sources inside Washington and Japanese military and political analysts both believe US will eventually grant Japan's wish because US would want Japan to aid in the containment of Communist China. However, Japan might not get all they want as the US also has doubts about the handling of top secret inivisible coating material formula.

Obviously, this is great news for Taiwan, so I am sure the report probably has some optimistic bias.
I scoured the net for other sources, it seems the news originated from a anti-Japanese Korean media then circulated into Chinese media.
I have yet to find any news about this from any major US media network.
Does anyone know anything that either confirms or denies this story?
Will Japan get those Raptors?

Of course. Have to keep the "Defense" Co's busy. Pretty much the only "Manufacturing" the U.S. has left.

But is the US government willing to share top of the line equipment and classified technology with other countries, even if it is its closest ally in Asia?

I don't see why not. If this were Great Britain, Australia, or Canada placing the order this would be a non-issue and wouldn't have even gotten a thread posted about it, likewise I don't have a problem with Japan doing so.

I would not have a problem selling these to Japan. It would also help greatly reduce the cost per unit on our purchases as well.

All for it, tons o work for me 😀

Very proud to have already been a part in getting quite a few of them into the sky. At least 50 of ours have the single most "structural durability critical" component whose integrity I have helped verify through non-destructive testing. A wicked bird, out of all the projects I have worked on in that field, that is the one I cherished the most.

Don't the raptors play a defensive role too? You need control of the skies over your country to defend it.

In any case, this WW2 trend of Japanese defense-only is on the decline...

I thought Raptors were Interceptors? They dont have very good range and were designed to intercept Soviet fighters and bombers in the skies above Europe. In other words to replace the AF's F-15s.

As for Japan getting stealth fighters, I kinda don't like the idea. But then again I didn't like the idea of Saudi Arabia getting M1 battle tanks with its special armor too.

And why is this great news for Taiwan? the US isn't going to sell Taiwan Raptors. not unless its 70 years from now and the design is old and outdated.

well they defenatly weren't designed to go up against the soviets becase the soviet union was all but gone when F22 started being developed. its mainly designed to go against other fighters in the event we go up against a country with an actual airforce (china) but they've also can be loaed up with limited air to ground munitions. I see japan mainly using these as defensive if a war ever broke out in asia they would need those fighters to maintain air control in thier country till the US can move enough air power into the region to keep china contained.

You are wrong. Canada spending this much money on planes would need several threads 😉

I'd sell them to Japan, but only if the USA could install a secret device that would allow the US military to disable the Raptors in the event the Japanese tried to use them against the USA.

We already sell Japan, dumbed down versions of are top of the line toys. I doubt we would sell them anything we can't trump.

If they did, would they tell us? 😕

Does Japan invest money in airplanes? They make great cars, I wonder how good their tanks can be if they produced them. Any info on Japanese military equipment? Plus they have top of the line technology to back them up if they really wish to develop weapons. I'm guessing if they spent the money on it then they could do it. Some links would be nice.

China has Su-30 MKK's from Russia, And Su-27's which it manufactures under license from Sukhoi. So F-15's aren't gonna cut it anymore.
I believe Japan manufactures F-16 clone under license from Lockheed Martin.

They plan to change their constitution so they can become a more "normalized" country, they also plan to become a permament member of the UN Security Council with US blessing.

Japan makes their own tanks as well as small arms, plus all kinds of other stuff. From what I seen it's mostly clones of one design or another but their MBT seems to be their own design. I have Janes Tank guide which lists most of this info. Although for the life of me I cannot find this information easily using Google.

I registered with Janes but not sure if they got anything on Japan in their free area. I'll post something if I find something once they activate my account.

Theres no point in building these superior weapons if we're going to hand them over to other countries allies or not.
If Japan wants to feel safe then build an Atomic Bomb.
