TOKYO (Reuters) - A stunned Japan was searching for answers on Wednesday after an 11-year-old schoolgirl killed a classmate by slashing her throat, the latest in a string of violent crimes by children.

...still think its damn cool to live in japan? i know there are a lot of japanese lovers on this board, hell in the US, but things are just getting worse by the year. Beheadings, juvenile murders, etc, rising double digits. Sure, the US and other countries have its share too, but i think its MUCH easier to shoot someone than to kill someone bushido style. You must be pretty FU'ed or just plain savage to be able to perform that.

They remind me and mirror the killings in movies like BR, Ichi the Killer, Suicide Club...etc.

I have japanese relatives, know the language and culture, so this is particularly un-fun.

I agree with MAME on this one - did I just say that? The reason Japanese murders seem so much more gruesome or extreme is because they don't have guns. So everything has to be done in a very bloody fashion. When you use guns (ie sniper shootings), things are more clean. People also don't really think of someone who got shot as being too violent. But when you hear the words "cut the girl's throat," you immediately picture it in your mind.

I see what you're saying, but that's like saying it's hard for people in African tribes to cut their heads in order to mark adulthood (the Nuer fyi). It's not hard for them at all, hell, the kids are begging to have it done. It's just what's available to them.

Besides, I'd say it's easier for a kid to kill someone because they have no idea about life and death. They just don't understand the significance.

That is a ritual, Alike the Nuer, i've heard worse but, ceremonious rituals are sanctioned by their governing bodies. This case is in a civilized society, in fact one of the most civil societies in the world(japanese are wellknown for etiquette/courtesy). This is no ritual so that comparison is totally moot.

here are some problems with the damn case:

She used penknife/boxcutter. She made her friend kneel down before it. She slit her throat several times, then slashed up her arms, trying to slit her wrists.

Now, no matter how many times u seen it on tv, this is not easily done...more so by an 11yr old small asian girl. You gotta be pretty damn wild to perform this...almost harakiri style.

...its alike the beheading by the 14yr old kid a few yrs back and the more recent 12yr old pushing 4yr old from building.

we had plans to move to japan...now i'm not so sure.
