<< Commercial whale hunting as done in the first half of the 20th century is not sustainable. Regulated commercial whale hunting as done today can be sustainable. >>

Too bad, as evidenced by the very topic of this thread, it is in fact NOT being regulated effectively. Are you even reading anything here before spouting off?

<< Japan has been organizing whaling expeditions for scientific purposes since 1987 >>

Scientific purposes, my ass. They need 440 of the animals for study? The IWC is either comprised of complete idiots, or is getting a kickback of the profits. This happens to be one of the VERY few issues about which animal rights activists and I agree. I believe the whale does deserve protection.

Same here. For me it extends to the Circus as well.

The vast majority of products that are made from whales can be artifically made so there really is no need for this primitive hunt.

Don't forget Norway also is a whaling country. The Japanese call their whale hunt a scientific expedition while Norway does it out in the open.

Are whales "cuter" than cattle or something?

yes. :)

The world whale population is stronger than it has ever been since the turn of the century.

Sure, when you compare it to when they were practically ridden from the face of the earth due to the whaling industry - that doesn't say much. Besides, if you raise whales like cattle you're welcome to eat as many as you like. :)

tcsenter, did whales kill your family or something?

Where do you get that whales are as dumb as mammals go, except for moles?

Whales and dolphins are thought to be very close if not equal to primate intelligence levels. They live in very complex social structures, they communicate extensively, etc, etc. I am starting to think you are closer to a mole's intelligence than a whale is.

Also, who thought up the "dude, where's my car?" and "dude, you're getting a blank" jokes? They suck, and are about as funny as killing whales, although for some reason that seems to be funny to some people too.

The researchers wish to study, why there are so few whales. (rimshot please)

IMHO, anytime we hunt a species (espescially one of the most intelligent) into extinction, the human race is reflected upon badly.

This really is criminal. Japan and Norway should not be allowed to drive whales into extinction while the other countries of the world have pledge to protect them. There should be economic sanctions. It is suck a lie that this is for scientific research. You can only learn so much from dead animals. they are better alive. The only reason that they are whaling is that they have a heritage around it. They need to wake up and smell the coffee. STOP whaling!

but then again it probably doesn't matter too much because we are putting most all natural species extinct anyways. these are just majestic so people care. god, when will people realize what we are doing. oh, i know, only when it is too late.

Whale & dolphin are believed to be next in line for intelligence after primates. It could mean that some whales might be smarter than some thick human.

Why would we want to let the Japanese or the any other people hunt whales when it is in the best of the world interest to keep them around. It is funny how your government feels the same way as you do. They have more protections for the damn trees & salmons than the whales even when the salmons trees is in private border, and not international water.

Tcsenter, you obviously know nothing about whales, so don't make anymore ignorant comments. Whales, like dolphins, ARE very intelligent, social, compassionate animals. I would like to know your reasoning behind your assumption of their stupidity. Because they are big and ugly? That would fit right in with your logic scheme now, wouldn't it? Take for instance, with dolphins, how many other species do you know of that have names? I mean, the dolphins have names. The mother gives their baby a name, and 20 years later they will remember their name, their friends' names, their parents', etc. Same goes for whales. They have very complex social structures, they have feelings, they can learn. Maybe if the japanese would stop HUNTING them and actually do research on their natural behavior in the wild, we would learn so much more. As for your smart-ass comments, please keep them to yourself.
