TOKYO (AP) ? A Japanese whaling fleet was returning home Wednesday carrying 440 minke whales killed during a six-month scientific expedition in Antarctic waters, fishing officials said.

The fleet's five vessels were scheduled to enter their home ports in southern Japan early Thursday, said Takaaki Sakamoto, a spokesman at Japan's Fisheries Agency.

Though the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling in 1986 to protect the endangered mammals, Japan has been organizing whaling expeditions for scientific purposes since 1987 under a program authorized by the IWC.

The Japanese government says that the expeditions are intended to gauge whales' migration patterns, population trends and diet. Opponents say that the program is commercial whaling in disguise, because after the research the whale meat is sold to wholesalers, and most of it ends up in restaurants.

Japan has been lobbying hard to get the ban on commercial whaling lifted, and is expected to make another push at a IWC meeting scheduled this year in the southwestern Japanese port of Shimonoseki.

The research whaling program costs Japan about $37 million a year, part of which is paid for by sales of the meat, the government says.

FISHERIES AGENCY TARGETS ENDANGERED WHALES

The Fisheries Agency of Japan intends to further escalate its whaling activities by targeting a new species - sei whales - in the North Pacific. Sei whales in the North Pacific were heavily exploited in the last century and are now classified as an endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The Fisheries Agency is also planning to take a further 50 minke whales as part of this so-called 'scientific' programme.

Please write to Hiroyuki Kinoshita, the Director-General of the Fisheries Agency of Japan, and ask him to halt this so-called "scientific" whaling program from:

that is nuts, I don't really care if they hunt whales (as long as they don't become endangered) but doin it under the radar like that... thats shady man, on a side not, I saw on dateline one time where the inuits (eskimos) were temp given the right to hunt whales "like their ancestors did" except they went out in a boat with a 50 calliber machine gun and gunned one down then harpooned it and towed it to shore, hardly "like their ancestors did" /end rant

They tried to study U.S. history in the 1940's and got their collective butts handed to them.

Who gives a damn about whales? They're delicious. Gawd, we slaughter millions of cattle and everyone goes DINNER! Kill a freaking whale and people go ape sh-t. Are whales "cuter" than cattle or something? They're certainly not more "furry" than a cow. Ridiculous. The world whale population is stronger than it has ever been since the turn of the century.

I'm sure it's a little bit of column A and a little bit of column B...if it weren't for the whale meat money, they wouldn't be able to do the research...if it weren't for the research, they'd have no reason to go out and get whale meat

Is there actually any meat on a whale? The only thing you ever hear about is blubber, which I've always understood was just fat. If there is meat, maybe it's better than beef. I wouldn't mind trying some.

I don't. Plus, I don't think cows are an endagered species last time I checked....

Scientific purposes, my ass. They need 440 of the animals for study? The IWC is either comprised of complete idiots, or is getting a kickback of the profits. This happens to be one of the VERY few issues about which animal rights activists and I agree. I believe the whale does deserve protection.

I don't see where the killing 440 of them comes into play here.... I guess we need to kill them to know where they were at the time...

Mmmmm.... Science is TASTY.

This makes me very angry. How can you study migration patterns of whales when to TAKE 440 of them out of the wild. Did they ever think that this may affect the whale's behavior.

Whale1: "Where did Bob go?"
Whale2: "I dunno, Susan and Billy have gone missing too."
Whale1: "Man, screw this, I'm not coming back here to breed next year."

Ryan :)
