Saw a Phaeton up close and personal this weekend and honestly I was unimpressed especially for the price....nice car and all, but not worth what they are asking IMHO...

Also that Jetta is aweful....looks like something Japanese as you said..

My guess is that it's US sales. 25% decline, and that's WITH Touareg sales taken into account. An aging product lineup and mediocore service/reliablity will do that to you :)

I can understand why, I cannot believe that many people bought Phaetons.
Seriously for that kind of money get a good car. I cannot believe anyone would spend
over 60 grand on a VW.

Plus with that 1.8 T Engine and all its problems, not to mention the quality issues with
cars coming from Mexico.

I bought a Golf TDi about 18 months ago because I wanted a diesel.

Just hitting 20K miles and so far mechanically its been rock solid, but it has been back in the shop with a couple of silly things.....the trunk would not unlock and the window fell off its rails into the door. Not too impressed with that.

Seeing as they are not allowed to sell diesels in NY state any longer I doubt I'll be buying another VW.

people don't normally have huge problems with the cars, they normally have those little problems like you said you had. they add up enough to really piss people off :p
there are some people who have had the large problems, but any car can have it's problems. VW's main problems are just the little quality control issues from what i understand.

Dealers are impatient with VW
By Ralph Kisiel
Automotive News / February 09, 2004

Volkswagen dealers demanded bigger incentives to help move 7-year-old nameplates that won't be replaced for another year.

"The mood of the dealers is not good," said Gene Langan, chairman of the Volkswagen National Dealer Council, after the make meeting. "Our impression is that Volkswagen is laying down this year. We're saying, 'Let's not give away '04.' "

In recent years, Volkswagen dealers have invested heavily in their stores. Many dealers built exclusive VW Marketplace stores, Langan said. Now it's time for VW to help dealers survive the temporary dearth of new products.

"The dealers want a commitment from Volkswagen to keep our volumes up until 2005," Langan said.

But at the testy make meeting, Volkswagen executives were noncommittal. "Our dealers are a little bit restless," said Gerd Klauss, CEO of Volkswagen of America.

In 2005, the Passat, Jetta, Golf and New Beetle will be revamped, Klauss said. Volkswagen will give dealers a preview of the redesigned 2005 lineup.

Dealers said they appreciate the preview, but they want subvented leases and low-interest loans. "Our challenge is we don't have cash to get people out of negative equity situations," Langan said.

To stimulate interest in its aging product lineup, Volkswagen will launch several variants, including a diesel Passat and the R32, which is the fastest Golf model ever. But it's unclear whether a few niche vehicles will boost sales significantly.

"January was a terrible month for VW dealers," Langan said. "I haven't talked to one dealer who said that business was good."

But Klauss appears reluctant to pile on the rebates. In the past, Volkswagen has maintained high residual values by avoiding generous incentives. "We won't deviate from our principles," Klauss said. "We won't give the farm away."

Volkswagen dealers also are worried about poor product quality. Company executives told them that an internal quality survey compiled by J.D. Power and Associates indicates that Volkswagen quality is improving.

But dealers were not impressed. "The dealers' response was, 'But you are coming from way down,' " Langan said.

Historically, Volkswagen has been below average in J.D. Power's Initial Quality Study. To identify quality glitches more quickly, Volkswagen dispatched a team of engineers to the United States last year.

But Klauss said dealers must understand that it will take time to fix quality. "Dealers don't see it happening fast enough," Klauss said. "Dealers are very restless. We have to work diligently and feverishly on quality issues."

Volkswagen will continue to plan relatively long product life cycles. But the automaker will plan more midcycle facelifts, said Ken Moriarty, executive director of corporate strategy at Volkswagen.

Volkswagen AG will stagger its vehicle launches to avoid a repeat of its current feast-or-famine philosophy.

Sigh. Didn't we just go over this in another recent VW bashing thread? Within the last 3 days?

Dealers complain.

I would wager that these same dealers are responsible for fully 1/2 of the sales problems that VW is having. Their awful reputation has preceded them to many prospective buyers (and probably turned away 95% of repeat buyers).

The fact that VW's cars are dirt old is probably 75% of the problem. The Japanese fresh their cars every three years and totally redesign them after 5. The Jetta and Golf have been in the same form pretty much unchanged since '98.

The same is true for the other German makes. Current 3 series dates back to what, 1998? Previous gen A4 dated from 96 (95 in Europe). Of course there also is the fact that the newest Japanese models are designed to surpass the previous gen European models. I.E. the Europeans still set the bar, and I'd hope that in 2004/2005 with the new 3 series and VW models, the bar will be raised again above the current Accord/Maxima/Altima/G35 standards.

Anyway, I think the current Jetta and Golf still look great, and the Passat still looks awesome after the 2001 refreshening. The designs have aged well.

No prob with expensive stuff, I actually enjoy audi alot, but the Phaeton for 70K really didn't do much for me....they should stick with their roots and offer more affordable cars at better quality.

Good, I hope they crumble and then come to realize that when they boned the air cooled loyalists by suing all the aftermarket VW parts vendors, it affected thier market share here in the U.S.A.

Maybe this will waken up those greedy CEO's.

In response to both, I think with prestige makes such as BMW and Merc people don't mind conservative styling as much as they do with more budget trnedy cars as VW...I agree though that the current VWs still look pretty darn good, especially with all of the chintzy looking stuff comming out of Japan...

If you ask me to pick a $20k car right now, Jetta will still be the one, I enjoy mine for over 3 years so far with no problems whatsoever, but not the V, I hope that's not true, its fugly design is beyond words.

Instead of putting Jetta internals into a Corolla body, they should have put corolla internals into a Jetta body.
Someone should tell VW that if it's not broken, don't BREAK it. :D
