Becomes oldest pitcher ever to win a game in MLB history!

Moyer (1-2) was sharp all evening as he picked up his 268th career win, tying him with Hall of Famer Jim Palmer for 34th on the career list.

Relying on a consistent cutter and mixing in a 78-mph fastball :p , the cunning lefty gave up just six hits and two runs -- both unearned -- as he kept the Padres hitters at bay and off balance.

Moyer completed alot of games in his life and threw deep consistently.

That guy has a great career to be proud of. Love off speed stuff.

Wow didn't know who he was but wiki says 49 and playing with young bucks is impressive especially at that position.

I think Strasburg's curve (80mph) is faster than Moyer's fastball now... holy hell. But grats on the old man winning a game, if he pitched long enough it was bound to happen...

funny thing is, 78 mph is faster than what 90% of athletic guys age 20-30 can throw :p

haha so true. I was an athlete growing up ran 100m 200m, played running back, wrestled etc etc and never got above 60MPH at throwing BB. I think it must be learned skill cuz I always threw like a putz.

I went to football camp one time and looked over at quaterback section and John elway was throwing 50 yards on his knees. Fucking amazing. Try it sometime.

It boggles my mind that he holds that record, when I was fairly certain Satchel Paige pitched into his 50's. Looking at the wiki, it seems Paige last won an MLB game at the age of 46 but pitched much later than that in the minors.

My kids are pretty heavily involved in baseball and I'm thinking more and more that it's more genetic than learned. Some kids can just throw hard and some can't, though it certainly can be enhanced through technique.

That's an amazing feat. Just to be on a MLB roster at age 49, let alone being in the rotation and still winning games.

Probably. It was just strange to me back then. I was fast strong and couldn't throw half as far/fast as weaker slower kids. You'd think that speed and strength would translate but it doesnt. old now I suck at hitting a golf ball too while my scrawny buddies can slam them

Yet another pitcher the Orioles let slip from their hands. Even though he wasn't putting up great numbers for us I thought he showed a lot of potential. We let him go too easily.

He left the Orioles in '95. It's time to move on :)

Every organization has let future All-Stars/Hall-of-Famers go, it's just the nature of the beast. The difference in absolute talent is slim at that level and it's not always easy to see the intangibles early on in a player's career.

Slight tangent, but I went on Wikipedia to find the ages of the manager and pitching coach of the Rockies to compare to Moyer and saw this. Since 1993 (the Rockies first season in existence), the Rockies have only had two different opening day first basemen - Andres Galarraga and Todd Helton.

The Orioles have let half of the HoF's last 20 year's classes through because our idiot owner was too cheap to pay for them. He has no problem tossing millions at some over-the-hiller but not a dime on development past the Triple-AAA level. Grr....

Yeah I'd love to see someone like Cuban come in and buy that team. Oh well, at least the tickets are dirt cheap behind home plate. Soon Nationals tix will be even more overpriced since they may actually make the playoffs this year.

Hell, I'd take a real Cuban like Castro over Angelos. At least we'd get some better players ;)

This would make a fun thread:

Name the best player in MLB today who started in the bigs the year you graduated from high school:

My answer: Jamie Moyer
