Wierd.. THe lodge was to the car's right. So close :(

Why did he leave the main road and go into the forest? ONe would assume he could just backtrack on the road and hit the lodge. Again, I guess because of the wintery conditions and the cold, it threw his senses off.

Or even a $5 map...

Quite possibly a $5 map is what killed him. One of the articles mentioned that certain maps don't list that road as seasonal.

What I can't understand is why he chose such a path. Just looking at that map it looks very rugged.

A map wouldn't have helped in this situation. Obviously his sense of directions were so far off he didn't even know to go the half mile back down the road.

Maps only help if you know where you currently are.

True. From the look of where the car was at I figured there might have been some sort of signage at that crossroads. No guarantee of that though.

wow...that really makes this tragic.

reminds me of the book/movie Alive...you have to make a choice (uneducated, at its worst). Go one way you live, go another, you die!

Tragic.

Having been stranded for so long already and probably suffering from hypothermia this must have been a terribly difficult and painful trek for him...Such a tragic story :(

Worst part being that he died with no clue as to whether or not his wife and kids were ok.....

Why do you think his pants and other clothes were found at different locations?

The searchers were thinking he was trying to leave clues. Thinking he may have been carrying a bag with him and was dumping clothes from it.

I read a news article that it may have been because of hypothermia & frostbite. It makes you sweat and feel like you are over heating, thus taking off clothes. I'm pretty sure he probably lost it (mentally) by the time he left the road... there is no way someone in their right mind would leave a road. Usually when you are lost out in woods you look for roads, not leave them.

I can relate to the guy

3 years ago I attempted to climb Mnt Elbrus in Russia. I developed AMS during my summit attempt at an altitude of 5100m. I didn't knew what I was doing and I told my climbing guide to go ahead because some other people were in trouble higher up the mountain. So there I was, on my own and I did not realize that I was in a dangerous situation. I was totally lethargic and just stayed there for probably 40 minutes. Then I started my way down but I could not walk so I just started gliding down on my back and belly. I lost a glove, cut my hands on the ice and developed frost bite. I had to stop every 5 minutes because I was so weak, eventually I made it to base camp which took me probably 6 hours.

Still have the scars on my left hand

I can only imagine how the guy was after 7 days

Is the lodge closed down this time of year? Would there be at least a couple cars going or coming to the lodge within 7-8 day period? If so, it would seem that the stranded car would have been seen.

But, I am a southerner who has never seen more than 2' of snow. Seeing that map and the terrain involved is tough.

If you look at page 6, you could see why he make the mistake in getting off the road. With the snow cover, that area looks like a road going down hill.
