Developer reveals Hollywood legend has seen upcoming sequel in 3D; claims Crysis 2 is 3D “benchmark”.

Crytek has revealed that James Cameron saw Crysis 2 running in 3D – and was a big fan.

Cevat Yerli, president and creative director at Crytek, told us the news when we interviewed him as part of the Modern Warfare feature which looks at the next generation of the FPS, and is on the cover of our new issue, E224.

Yerli confirms that Crysis 2 is not Crytek’s first foray into 3D, saying that the developer began work two and a half years ago on a project that was exclusively in stereoscopic 3D. “A lot of this knowledge is now in the Crysis 2 3D experience,” he says. “That’s why we have, in my opinion, a benchmark 3D implementation.”

Yerli even draws comparison between Crytek’s upcoming sequel and the Cameron-directed smash hit that has fuelled Hollywood’s current love for all things three-dimensional. “I’ll even claim it’s the same as Avatar’s status in 3D,” he says.

“James Cameron has seen Crysis 2, and he loved what he saw because his eyes are trained for 3D more than anyone else’s, and that makes me confident that we have a super-high-end 3D experience on all formats.”

When asked what led one of Hollywood’s most successful directors to see Crysis 2, Yerli laughs and says: “that’s another story.”

If you haven't seen the latest trailer, complete with soundtrack by NIN, here yea go.

James Cameron needs to shut up and go away. Freaking blowhard idiot.

Now that that's out of the way, the trailer does look nice I just hope it's not as painfully boring as the first game.

Sweet, I've been looking forward to Crytek's next 6-8 hour tech demo.

yeah i've been playing some crysis lately after getting a new gpu... and it looks decent. but you can already see it starting to look dated compared to newer dx11 games like bfbc2 and metro 2033.

but yeah... i still don't understand why they just don't make engines instead of full games.

Um, what? Crysis 1 is still the best looking game out there, especially so considering just how much of the game world is open to you.

I'll add a laugh out loud to that statement.

They make both, what's the problem with that?
The best way to get other people to use your engine is to use it yourself and show people what can be done with it. Cryengine 1 was high end, no one really used it. Cryengine 2 was equally high end, a couple more people used it, and now Cryengine 3 is coming out soon, and that's getting a few people using it too, but it owuld barely have seen the light of day if Crytek didn't make their own games.

Its just like James C. to copy from video games. He already stole avatar worlds from World of Warcraft. If you dont believe me. Take a look at Nagrand and Zangarmarsh in WoW and tell me he didnt steal from those.

Not just that, but they've bought out quite a few studios since Crysis. Free Radical is doing the multiplayer for Crysis2, and they had nothing to do with Crysis 1 or the development of the engine.

Besides, if you look at who's licensed the engine, it goes way beyond just game development companies. Lot's of government and military org's have licensed it too.

Bad Company 2 isn't even in the same league as Crysis. I don't understand how people keep saying Bad Company 2 is that good looking cus it's not. Metro is much closer but still no cigar.

Yep. People must not be turning up some of the high end graphical settings and seeing how sick the lighting and shading gets.

Look at some of those screenies.

Someone should tell their artists that a sunset with bright full moon and fully visible stars all within about a 5 degree viewing window isn't possible. The light pollution from the sun would ensure that the stars were unseen and that the moon was faint, not glowing.

Uhh.. who cares? If it looks good, why does it matter if it's realistic?

BFBC2 looks fantastic in videos and screens, but in game it's really not that impressive. Don't get me wrong, they accomplished plenty with smart game design, but that can only take you so far. As long as it's missing a lot of advanced, and even not so advanced graphical features, it won't really compare to Crysis, IMO.

BFBC2 was decent looking but the colors were too highly saturated and the incessent dust/snow blowing everywhere didn't help. It was no Crysis, that's for sure. Also the animations, while adequate, can look bad sometimes particularly while sprinting.

With that said some of the Crysis multiplayer suffered similarly in terms of animations. For my money, the animations in Modern Warfare 2 were some of the best I've seen in a shooter, but with such small maps maybe they can get away with it whereas the Crysis and BC2 maps are much larger in comparison and perhaps require more system resources... I'm speculating here obviously.

Are you guys referring to Crysis as "vanilla" or as modded. cause theres a HUGE difference. Very high via in game settings is not all that.

I don't really think so. I tried plenty of mods, I ended up back at stock every time. There were a few that claimed to make the game more realistic, and maybe they did technically, but they didn't look nearly as good as stock to me. The only mod I ended up using was the 1+GB texture mod, and even that was still kind of meh, since it was just a sharpen filter mod.

Stock game to me is still the best looking thing out there.

Also how do you get a nearly full moon when the suns that close to it?
