Article So I was watching MSNBC earlier today as Bush outlined his four step plan to deal with immigration. The four steps are basically nothing different than what he had already proposed, but I guess he felt like if he showed up near the border and reiterated what he had said before people would think that he actually cared about doing something about illegal immigration. Personally I don't think either the Republicans or Democrats want to do anything about it. Both parties know that illegal workers help big business in this country make more money, and we all know that big business for the most part funds their campaigns. Additionally the Democrats see legalized illegals as voters for them. So it's no surprise that nothing has been done about the problem since the middle of the 80's, unless you consider the Reagan amnesty, which pretty much gave the green light to all south of the border to come one, come all.
Bush's plan is to : 1- Secure the border which includes additional fencing, more border patrol agents as well as adittional high tech equipment.
2- Enforcing the law regarding companies hiring illegal aliens.
3- A temporary worker program.
4- Resolving the status of those already here without amnesty.
MSNBC was showing a split screen at the time of his speech. The other half of the screen was showing illegals climbing the fences, going though holes in the fences as well as tunnels, and also swimming across the Rio. It was quite hilarious actually. It's going to be extremely difficult to stop the flow.
Hopefully the government has made it easier for employers to verify the status of illegal workers as previously most employers had no way of actually determining if a SS card was fake and/or using someone else's identity.
"As spelled out in the presentation, which White House aides describe as ideas for debate, undocumented workers could apply for three-year work visas, renewable indefinitely at a cost of $3,500 each time. To get a green card that would make them legal permanent residents, they would have to return to their home countries, apply for reentry at a U.S. embassy or consulate, and pay a $10,000 fine."
Another piece of immigration legislation introduced "would make illegal immigrants who were in the country before June 1, 2006, eligible for legalization after a $500 fine, a security clearance and proof that they had been actively employed before that date. After six years, immigrants who learn English, stay crime-free and pay an additional $1,500 would be eligible for permanent residency and eventually citizenship. Under the bill, hundreds of thousands of guest workers could enter the United States each year to fill jobs that Americans do not want."
I'm sure a lot of illegals will be stepping forward to pay $3500 for a work visa, then go back home at some point so they can come back and pay a $10K fine. Too funny. Either plan would basically be on a sort of voluntary compliance without much of any sort of penalty as is currenty the case. Illegals get caught, then escorted back across the border and re-enter days if not the next day later.
So I think everyone agrees that the border should be secured and employers should be penalized for hiring illegals without green cards. I can go along with a temporary guest worker program, but without oversight workers would just come here and stay. Without penalties for breaking the law we have a country that is literally being invaded. We could start with jail time and a fine for the first time they're caught along with fingerprinting them so they can be identified if and when they come back. Get caught twice and you can never become a citizen of the US, along with a longer jail term, additional fine and deportation. I know many will claim we don't have enough jail space and they do work no one else wants to do. I bet the same argument went on after the slaves in the South were freed. Someone still picked the crops. And we can build more jails. And while incarcerated they can help build the fence at the border.
