ok here are the resources i have to work with:
i have desktop pc (windows xp) that i sync my iphone with.

i have laptop mac (macbook pro intel based) with windows and leopard on it.

what is the best utility to jailbreak my iphone with? it has the 1.1.3 firmware on it. i tried ifuntastic last night and it said it was "unshackled" and everything happened way program said it would but whenever i made a change it wouldn't apply to the phone.

what do people use the most?

When did you buy the phone (that will determine which bootloader you have), and what firmware release are you running (1.1.3? 1.1.2?).

The tutorials at iClarified cover both macs and PC's.

Edit:
Apparently, they came out with a new method for both Windows and Macs which is really easy this morning
Windows Jailbreak: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=656
Mac Jailbreak and Unlock: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=664

Glossary of iPhone hacking terms (as defined by me anyway):
Bootloader => the BIOS of the iPhone, determines what programs get loaded when
Baseband => the firmware "operating system" for the wireless cell/WiFi/Bluetooth CPU on the iPhone
Firmware => the firmware "operating system" for the touchscreen and apps CPU on the iPhone

Jailbreak => allows the use of 3rd party applications via the Installer
Hactivate => allows activation of the iPhone (gets past the initial welcome screen, not needed if user is a legitimate AT&T subscriber)
Unlock => allows the use of SIMs other than the one the iPhone is tied to (ie. SIM/carriers other than AT&T in US, T-Mobile in Germany, Orange in France, etc).

after about two hours i finally got it jailbroke using ibrickr. i finished at like 4am and checked some sites to find a new very easy way...lol oh well.

right now i am struggling finding games and apps that work without accessing safari. lots of sites require one time pay membership. and i can't figure out how to change the backgrounds and themes and change the AT&T part to whatever i want.

edit*
i found summer board under installer app

I wouldn't have thought that there were that many that required subscriptions - I haven't run into many at all (Navizon, and Labyrinth are the the only too that I've seen).

Yeah, Summerboard and Customize allow a lot of desktop customization. Summerboard is pretty slick.

Wow - to get iBrickr running didn't you have to downgrade to 1.0.2? That's a long way back in time to get down there. :) I thought iBrickr 0.91 was only 1.0.2 compatible.

I've had the opposite experience. iGo, iSolitaire, iBlackjack, Caissa (Chess), Othello, Lights Off, Mines (Minesweeper), Five Dice (Yahtzee). None of the games that I've tried over the installer have required any subscription or connection to Safari except for Labyrinth and that's still a 10 level demo.

What games on the installer require a connection to Safari? If I go Installer -> Games, I've tried all the ones with stars next to them and they are all free and without Safari.

Is your Youtube working after jailbreaking with ZiPhone? I can't figure out how to get Youtube working again. Everything else works fine though.

To enable YouTube (and Yahoo Mail), go to the installer -> sources, then edit, then add and add http://i.unlock.no, then over to Install, down to Unlocking Tools and install YouTube Activation.

That doesn't work for me. The error says "Unable to connect to Youtube". It's not the error about activating in iTunes.

This finally worked for me:

The first thing you have to do after jailbreaking is installing BSD Subsystem and Open SSH in installer.

After that, download this file: http://soundsgood.cocolog-nift...blog/files/youtube.zip

Then, you have to use a program like WinSCP (Windows) or Independence (Mac) to access iPhone file system.

Put them in the /var/root/Library/Lockdown/ folder with WinSCP or Independence.

If you don't know how to do this, I suggest going to HacktheiPhone.com for tutorials.
Also, you should see an activation record folder under lockdown. Delete any file in there.

Exit the program. Reboot your iPhone and you should have a working You Tube program now.
